p.1 #1 · 40D vs 5D

I had a 30D and loved it. I take Pro Shots for Webshots and they like the 5D's 12.8mb. It is a slow camera and the full-frame cuts my 300 f/4L IS down to only 300 instead of a 480mm with the crop. How is the newer camera as far as resoultion and picture quality?T here were issues with the 30D's 8mb and blown highlights and overall problems with big enlargements. Thanks Rich...

This should be in Gear Talk...Canon Mount The 40D is a great camera but......for a new one I`m not all that impressed.....stick with your 5D, it may be slow but much cleaner, better in low light and save your money for the update that will come sooner or later. It will probably blow every thing away

Thanks, I put it here because this is where wildlife shooters are. In gear talk it is always 12bit 14bit this and that. I want feedback from actual people who use what I do....Rich

p.1 #4 · 40D vs 5D

Hi Rich, I have both cameras. Although I tend to use my 40D more often for wildlife than my 5D (mostly for birds), and the 5D does not have the reach that the 40D's 1.6 CF has, I like the images that the 5D produces even better than my 40D. I'm not a professional or even an amateur, just a hobbiest and I'm even planning on selling the 40D and getting a 1DmkIII. If you are a professional photographer shooting wildlife, perhaps you might consider taking a closer look at the Mark III as well.

I've just bought the 40D as an upgrade from the 400D to go with my 5D and found that I'm having a struggle at the moment to avoid blown highlights, a struggle I didn't have with the 400D.

I know that 5D owners cannot imagine there is anything out there that competes but have a look at this link for this comparison by Miles Hecker
http://wyofoto.com/40D_Image%20quality/40D_shootout.html
or of course wait for the 5D mk2
Cheers

I have already got that link before and have seen the limits of such tests.... For the fun, I took the 20D samples which looks flat in comparizon with the 2 others, and with Lightroom, just enhanced a couple of things, and guess what, the result was even much better than the two others... Results : The so called enhancement of 14 bits and bla bla of the 40D is more some differences in the settings in the DigicIII, that you can easily get if you know a little bit of PP software... So the 20D is not a bad camera, you could get the same results and even more than the 40D with a few secs of changes.... Regarding the 5D, it is the same thing, except it is a FF, and you really get things better because of the size of the sensor and pixels, like bokey and low lite management..... But right, you loose the 1.6 crop factor for far end pictures, which is not really a problem if you use a 1.4x or 2x... Moreover, you can crop the 5D pix without loosing that much quality...

IQ has got to suffer using a 1.4 or 2x teleconverter on any camera.

So you may be right back to the IQ of the 40D when using 5D plus a 1.4 or 2x
