p.1 #1 · Essential Programs?

I am always interested in working with new tools for my pictures but sometimes its hard to find programs when you dont know what they are called or what they do. So I thought this would be a good place to get input from lots of different users out there and get a list of any type of application you think is a great addition to your editing. This can include plugins, stand alone apps, anything you like. File management, editing, slideshow creation, HDR, you name it. If you can, list the program name and a website so we can all check them out. I'm sure we will find things we may have been looking for all along.

I figured I would start off with one I love to use and I rarely ever see mentioned when people ask about doing touch ups for portraits. Its the Kodak Digital Gem Airbrush plugin. I think for the speed and flexiblity it gives in smoothing out skin its great. I have tried some other plugins and like this the best. It can be found at http://www.asf.com/

So what else can we add to the list?

My essential applications are pretty much vanilla Adobe, Lightroom, Photoshop with the NeatImage Pro+ noise reduction plugin/app and Dreamweaver for my website.

For general use,

  1. UFRaw
  2. dcraw
  3. GIMP
  4. Inkscape
  5. Final Cut
  6. GPSPhotoLinker or Geotag

Nothing terribly special, just a non-adobe workflow.

Indesign, a page layout program by Adobe. Why? Because it lets you create and control printed omages with type. Want to write a book, make a poster, do Xmas cards, make a calendar or write an instruction booklet? Indesign puts the pieces together; uses links to the pictures, offers all sorts of type options and prints with same profiles you use in PS.

He's either a Linux or an Mac OS user... or maybe both...

Me, I use LR most of the time. PS when needed and Noise Ninja.

I'd love to be able to find something analogous to LR for Linux, but nothing is really out there worth the time yet...

To be fair - non-microsoft would be more accurate.

There is the bluemarine project - but it is not officially ready for general use.

I have CS2, but I really only use it when I'm preparing an image for use that requires very fine retouching. For just about all of my typical print sales, which is sports and some other work, I use Aperture, Noise Ninja, and even iPhoto occasionally if i'm just quickly cropping a JPEG for web use.
