I always thought it would be entertaining to show up to a wedding with a slew of disposable cameras! Just to see the reaction. But Im weird like that.

Mike, I'm running the 17-55 and 70-200 2.8IS combo, using 40D's as main and 30D's as backups and have obtained great results.

It's my first year in the wedding business but my fourth in photography, and I've tried from 400D's to 5D, and my favorite one of all remains to be the 40D. That is, until I open the studio next year, I'll upgrade to MkIII's and more L glass.

I have used all three, but now use a Mk3, Mk2 and 5D and sometimes film in a 1v for a little artistic fun..... they all can work wonderfully..

I don't think that easy to tell what camera made what image, and to be honest I don't think it really matters very much. What matters most is knowing how to use the equipment to get the shot you want.

Right now, my primary is a 40D with a 20D/10D for backups. Next month, I plan to purchase a 5D and probably a 30D or another 40D for the upcoming wedding season. I would have liked to have the 5D successor, but it doesn't look like that's going to materialize until fall 2008.

"2 canon A640's...10MP with built in flash.....you can't go wrong!! They really are the ultimate wedding camera...and they can fit in your pocket, so no assistant to pay"

Hey Gabemc I had a look at your website, did you really take all those photos with Canon A640? They are really great photos.

5D, 20D, 10D (will convert to IR soon).

I have also shot weddings with XT and 1D.

Plan to shoot 2x5D plus the 20D and 10D(IR), eventually.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

My intent here was simply to satisfy my curiosity about the type of bodies members here are using, not the ability of the camera (or photographer) to take a good picture.

The main question I wanted answered was what percent of wedding shooters here use the 1D series versus all the others, and that number has been running at about 30%.

Call me a snob, an a-hole or whatever but its my opinion. When I got married I wouldnt have hired anyone who told me there were going to show up with a 300D or 350D, or a D40 or D80.

Well, Let me get this straight....
I guess you would prefer an amateur with a Canon 5D and a shiny new 1500.00 lens to shoot your wedding instead of a Professional with a Canon XT and a good lens? Is that what you are Saying? Its like my friend once said, $15,000 and 15 miles doesn't make you a biker, $1500 and 15,000 miles does. If you dont get it, never mind.

Interesting result. I for one believe that choice of equipment is important & that would be relevant regardless of the level of skill of the photographer.
When I was married 23 years ago we hired a guy who was technically spot on, used Hasselblads but creatively was not up to a high standard... (I was just starting out & had no clue myself) Now letssay the guy down the road had been shooting on a 35mm Pentax & doing some cool creative shots. Which photos would I like to have now as a memory of my wedding day........ yea I will have the Pentax dude.
Having said that, I currently use Mk3's. They are great tools. One of the benefits I am seeing is the ability to get a great shot out of files which are less than ideal in terms of exposure. Clearly there are moments in the heat of a wedding when your exposure may be off a bit. Since starting with the D30 I have seen great improvements at each stage along the way. (the D60 was an upgrade I wish I had skipped) The 1DS was great & the improvements in the 1DS2 made it worthwhile. The 1DS3 though in my opinion is as much as I could want in a DSLR.

Bob...just to add something...
$15,000 and 15,000 miles is also good combination.

I believe in bringing the best possible equipment. No compromises.
Image is important in this industry. Some clients are going to have a hard time understanding why you showed with a Rebel if their paying thousands of dollars to be a professional.

I'm not talking from a photographers standpoint. We can talk about equipment until the cows come home. Want to have the best possible image without any compromises later...cropping, bad focusing in low light, bad ISO performance, etc...all issues with prosumer cameras...then step up your game and invest in the best equipment. It's worth it.

Does a race team go with the second best car to the track?

Either pick up a 1DIII/1DsIII or a D3. You know you want one.

Just remember...buying a Ferrari won't make you a better driver either though.

Chris Cooke wrote:
The body now-a-days is just as important and your lenses. When I started and was shooting film, the body wasnt as important. The lens and film is where you got your IQ. I dont think a person calling themselves a "professional" wedding photographer should show up with a Digital Rebel, I think it undermines the profession. If the photographer is a part time, a friend of the B&G or a "shoot and burn" then I can understand, and it shows that the B&G went with budget over quality and experience. If a client is paying good money for a

I disagree to some extent. The 300D or any older body would be an issue. I don't think there is any difference in IQ between the 400D and the 40D. The 5D, any of the 1 series mark II or either of the 1 series mark III would be a step up in IQ useing the equivelent lenses. Glass and the person behind the camera are more important then the body.

Ok, I have a better explanation, I think. The 1D, D1x, D1h, etc were all lower in MP than a digital rebel, D40, etc yet were used by pros at one time and some still use them. The body quality, or MP or whatever else isnt the issue I am arguing.
My feelings are that of experience and know-how of the photographer. In the little corner of the world I live in (SF Bay Area) you cant throw a rock without hitting a "professional photographer" and if you go on SF bay area craigslist and look under "creative services" you will understand. If you took 20 photographers who had Rebels or D40's, D50's or any of the consumer cameras you can buy off the shelves at best buy and asked about their experience and technically ability you would be SHOCKED to hear some of their responses. I put an ad out for a assistant photographer/second shooter and was amazed at how many told me they were professionals and used the big box store bodies and kit lenses! When I asked about their flash experience lots of them didnt understand the difference of having the flash on the camera or having it off camera on a bracket or otherwise. Lots of them also didnt know what aperture priority or shutter priority was for! If I see someone with a higher end camera I think its going to be a better chance that since they are spending $2500+ on a body that they know how to use it! Especially if they also have the glass that is pro quality too. I dont know many people who will go out and buy a 5D or 1DsII who will shoot on Auto the whole time. I am SURE there are people out there with money to burn who do have those cameras and dont know how to use them but I am pretty certain its a lot more rare than someone who buys a lesser camera and lens and uses it all on Auto. I am speaking only on what I have seen, and like I said I am sure there are exceptions to my thinking but in my experience this is what is going on in my area.

I'll be quick to say it's the artist that makes the image, but I just used my new 5D for a wedding last weekend, and it made better images than my 30D (which I also used). I think it's foolish to think that a Digital Rebel will produce the same image quality as a 5D or 1D series. Don't get me wrong there are lots of people who can make a 20D look good. I just think when you take a good photographer and give him good tools, things just work better.
