Hi all, I'm a point and shooter using a D40 and learning the ropes, at the moment I'm reading up on exposure and this is all on auto mode so I guess the feedback is just on composition and style rather than too much on my processing... However tips for the processing would be great as I can use them to develop the pictures while I learn photoshop.. thanks
I hope you don't mind...I took the liberty to do a little really fast processing on #1. I would have taken a little more time if this was something I was actually working on (and if i had a larger version to work with)...but anyway...this is what i did with it:
slight crop and rotate clockwise
smart sharpen (.8 pixels, 125%)
auto color
auto levels
slight burn on the corners
slight dodge on the columns
increased contrast very slightly with curves
added a duplicated layer (multiply mode) with a 40% Gaussian blur with adjusted curves
1 I would consider cropping off the top down to the top of the arch at the end - the picture is about the couple with the little guy looking on - the top makes it too large and makes the viewer wonder what you were trying to show - buiding or the story.
2 is very nice capture of the mood - I would be tempted to crop in closer just on either side of the boys hands since the background is not adding to the picture and it will make the 3 bigger in the picture emphasizing the message.
3 does not work for me - halo around his head and framing through his face creates a mood of a random capture.
Well to be honest random is exactly what it was, he was crawlining across the bed to me and I took this just as his front hand was placed into thin air rather than on the bed and after this shot if it was a cartoon it would have been me picking him up from the floor. the original shot was a full head on of him crawling. So I guess you got this spot on !
