Great post Tom! It definitely shows how small, almost no change at all, plays a huge role in macro photos.

And interesting that the first has more perceived sharpness due to the background too. Great simple example.

Quite a dramatic change. My problem is often trying to decide which view I like best.

Ditto. The other is avoiding distracting flowers in the background...

I think the first image seems sharped due to the increase in contrast between the background and the damsel -the critter almost gets lost in the second shot.

Tom- you should have done this as a which shot do you prefer
I actually prefer #2 which seems to have a nice light/colour balance.
I get an extreme version of this when doing flower dewdrop refractions - a slight change in POV can give completely different BG colouring.
