p.1 #1 · A question for the fast prime users.

For those here using the fast primes (24 1.4, 35 1.4, & 85 1.2) I have a question about your flash usage .. many seem to just use available light with these lenses. Is that right?

That really depends. Nothing is concrete to say that I wouldn't use a flash with my 85L. If the scene calls for flash, or I want to get creative, I use it. If not, I don't.

It depends on what you want to achieve in the end.

I only use flash with my fast primes if I am at the dance of an event where the lights our down and there's hardly any light.

I use the flash with them when necessary - in the same instance, it's a different look with and without and I might go for one of the other.

Sometimes, when it's really dark, I *need* the IR beam from the flash for the camera to auto-focus. In those cases, when I don't want flash, I'll flip the flash behind me (a poor man's ST-E2. haha.)

I'll often use the AF assist beam on the cameras (techno, you know the AF beam still works if you go to the custom functions and turn off "flash fires?")

I use flash if I want the lighting for a reason, not really because I can't shoot without it.

Evan, thanks - I think I'd previously seen that custom function and thought "why wouldn't I want the flash to fire?"

That'll be good when I know I won't want the light for an extended period of time.

Techno and Even, are you guys talking about a function that will help my fast primes focus (AF Assist) without the flash firing? Because I've been looking for something like this.

What I've always wondered as well is why in the world does my focus assist act I've put the camera under water. It feels, looks, sounds like a short circuit. Is this normal?

I have 40D's.

On the 5D its custom function 7 in the menu.

My AF assist just flashes the red grid... no short-circuit feel here.

Hmmm, I do believe both of my camera's does it. When the room is low lit and dance is going on. You know what I"m going to start a thread to see who else experiences this...

Thanks Evan

Anyone know if this is possible with a 40d?
