p.1 #1 · Anybody use ".net" or something else?

Hello everyone,

I have finally come up with a name for my business. It's short, simple, and to the point, but it is already a registered ".com" domain. My question is, do any of you use ".net" or something else for your domain? I just want to hear some thoughts from anyone that has been in the same position, and what you did about it........Did you go with ".net", or did you tweak the name a bit, etc. Do you think it's a bad business decision? Bad branding? Good idea? Doesn't matter?

Share your experience if you would please.

Thanks, Tad

are you prepared to lose some customers by going to the wrong site?

is the samename.com in a similar business?

Hey Corey,

The other .com business is in a totally unrelated field. My gut feeling is telling me the smartest thing to do would be to stay with a .com domain, but I want to hear from some more people first.

Thanks for the reply Corey

Tad -

I use .net just because the .com wasn't available. It's never been an issue for me. I designed my business cards so .net was highlighted in a different color so it would stand out.

I'd go with the .com if it's available, just because that's what everyone thinks first.

I use .NET all the time--C++, that is. :-)

I'd recommend against it. You'll have much more people Googling your business name instead of going directly to the .com. If it's a choice between an extremely long one that takes two minutes to type (like weddingphotographydirectory.com) or a .net, I'd say the .net is better. If not, go for the .com. Buy at least 3-5 years to save yourself the hassle of possibly forgetting to renew it. Most registrars also give you a better deal the first time you buy. A few years ago there was a sale going on and I was able to register about 20 domains for $15 each for 5 years. :-)

i started with a .net and the other was a very reputable photographer in the guys area on the .com. I waited and waited and 3 years later the moron forgot to re-register his name and I bought it for 10 years. I just renewed it again and own it for the next 15 years.

.com is like 1-800

You can use .net like you use 1-866, but it's not the same thing.

You wanna be a .com if you can help. Try some other names?
