p.1 #1 · Does this sound like a good business deal?
A guy that I know runs a really nice frame shop and sells a ton of stuff including prints. His daughter is getting married in April and he asked me to shoot the wedding. He said instead of money I could put up a really big canvas and some smaller prints and a banner for my company inside of his store to advertise.
Does that sound like a good deal or should I just charge him?
The frame shop is in our local mall which is always very crowded.

Sounds like he doesn't value your service. If he did, he'd look at paying you for it, not doing in the easy way out.
Any kind of trades should be the reverse. If he asked you to shoot the wedding, but you wanted a good deal you could offer to trade for his services, not his services for yours.

I bet you'd have to supply the canvas and prints, too, huh? Don't bother asking him, because I'm sure (since he's such a nice guy) that he'd tell you that, as a gesture of his good will, he'd buy them once you give him the digital files....
Honestly, it sounds like he's taking advantage of you, or attempting to, at the very least.
I doubt you'd get any sales from this. He gets free wedding photography and some free decorations for his business to show off HIS goods, not yours.
Once you turn him down, he'd probably offer credit at his store equal to what you'd charge. Pass that up as well, he's still making WAY out on the deal.

Be polite and respectfully decline. Tell him you really appreciate the offer, but you can't afford to discount your services that drastically.
+1 .... doesn't look like a deal that could offer you much.

You would find a business that would do that for you for free also. I see it as somewhat insulting.
If it were a bridal shop who's clients were likely to fall into your price bracket you would do something similar for exclusive rights to promote through that store.

I would suggest that you could reach an agreement that would not have anything to do with his daughter's wedding.
You could put his frames in your studio and your work in his mall shop to further your business. But to shoot a wedding for free with the hope that you will make that money back from his form of advertising is not likely. I have never heard of a bride finding a wedding photographer through a frame shop. Wedding vendors are your best bet. Don't waste any energy with this person. If he seriously appreciates your work then he will still want to book with you and work out the advertising details outside of that. To me he seems to just be looking for an easy way to get free wedding coverage for minimum effort on his part.

I agree with pretty much everything that has been said so I won't beat a dead horse. I will say that I would caution overreaction, it's possible that in this guys head he truly believes this to be a good deal for both of you. Perhaps he has visions of his own daughter on huge canvas prints in his own shop, the idea of which he might love. Before insulting him back try talk to him about some limited thing after the wedding, but that for expense reasons you will need to charge your normal fees.

That Curtis guy has it on the head.
Maybe work a deal where the value of his service contributes to your price - but there is a certain point you might not want to go below.
Though - maybe his daughter is hot and the wedding will be fabulous.
HAHAHA......DANG you are funny.........

Tell him that April is an extremely business month for you and that you have two brides you have spoken to about that date........leave it at that....he'll get the point.......

I would offer a trade for a stock of frames. If he would give me 20 16x24's and 20 11x14's (or whatever your best selling sizes are), that I could, in turn, sell to future clients for a profit, it would actually work out well!
Just remember that the set up he's currently offering would cost YOU money.
