p.1 #1 · Kestrel Kill on an Owl Hunt (6)

We finally had some sun light today so went looking for the resident Long-eared owl this afternoon. Started out around 2:00 PM, it was windy and COLD, had to be -15c with the wind chill.
I arrived early and noticed a female Kestrel hunting along the hydro lines.

The out of focus dive!

She hit ground hard and popped up through the grass with her prize.

The death pinch!
She hauled it back up the line to finish the job..

After this she took the mouse and stashed it in a pine tree, then carried on looking for more.

Oh yeah, we did find our Long-eared Owl, this time in some light.

Thanks Maggie,
A few of the shots are not that great, but they do help tell the story so I through them in. Man o man, was that a fun outing!

Rob,

I haven't seen you post in awhile > I've been away but check in > So nice to see you're post.

Great capture on the Kestrel > Shot number 2 Is KILLER!!
4 & 5 have some tuff lighting from the
side but still good shots.

The Long eared owl looks weird to me > I've never seen a long eared owl before. The picture looks stretched out vertically. Is this d/t resizing or is this how the bird looks naturally?? I think I've seen one other post of this owl and If I remember it looked the same way. Those eyes are intense.

So great job on number 2 and looks like you were in the right place at the right time >> The Mouse is in focus and I think the caption should read " Uh Oh!" Or something a little more adult in nature

Thanks Anthony,
The Long-eared owls are very strange looking Anthony, even more so when in the flesh. A better name for them I think would be Long-Owl.
Thanks for you comments, appreciated,
Rob
