The really odd thing about this...it probably is not the first time he did it. And that means it must have worked in the past. Interesting marketing strategy.
Maybe he started with a simple letter saying he was clearing his files. Then it progressed to the mess he created for himself in this case.
Wow, unbelievable! And the guy was even paid in full, what a crock pot! I guess he's going to have to take more pictures to make up that settlement...too bad no one in their right mind will use him again.
The idea of letting people know that you will be destroying the negatives soon and offering a chance to purchase is not a bad idea in itself. In fact a client should be notified as a courtesy.
Nothing wrong with the idea of upselling either.
This guy went to extremes though if the story is true.
Yes, a mere 550k. Acting like an idiot can be expensive.
I am taking for granted that this person was asked multiple times to end the antics. I'm sure he had ample opportunity to come to his senses before lengthy motions were filed with the courts.
He was trying to earn bonuses on his original (paid) sales through a mild form of extortion. Let's hope this puts him out of business, so that an honest photographer can take his place in the market. If we could see his work, it might be very apparent why second copies were never purchased. Sad thing is, he will probably try to run the settlement checks through the shredder before he mails them!
I would not even allow this type of person to bag my groceries.
I would guess this guy wasn't doing very well in business, and rather than spend energy trying to find business, he spent energy trying to antagonize and threaten people to get more money. I'm glad the guy got taken to the farm. Just think if all the crap people in the world turned their energy toward doing good.......

Maxwell Smart could not have said it any better.
Actually i would question whether the story is true or bogus myself. Not that i would put that kind of behaviour beyond some but hey just because it sits there on a web site.
You all know about the story re the American who put his Winnabago on cruise control then went out back to make coffee. He then sued Winnebago for millions for not explaining that cruise control did not meaan you could leave to steering wheel.
Well there are still idiots who pass that one on at parties as if it were fact. Only in America you know, only the rest of the world dumb enough to believe it.
Thank you for the link. Whenever I feel like my work is not quite up to snuff I always find it helpful to see websites of COMPLETE HACKS who are somehow making it; then I feel like a genius again!
