p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Contax 90/2.8 T Sonnar

I've been looking for a portrait lens for some time. Since I already have equipment to do the job, I haven't bought a manual lens for fun yet. I've looked at the Zeiss Hassy 80/2.8, Jena Biotar 75/2.8, Zeiss Contax 85/1.4, Leica (old) Sum. 90 and like them all. However, while browsing I came across the Contax Zeiss 90/2.8 T Sonnar and thought I'd ask you guys what you thought about it. I just saw it so haven't had a chance to google any research on it yet.

Any thoughts on the lens?

Thanks in advance!

That's a rangefinder lens for G cameras. Can't really adopt it to an SLR that easily

AFAIK the Contax Zeiss 90/2.8 is for the the Contax G rangfinder cameras and can't be adapted to any other camera. On the G cameras it would be a good portrait lens. If you want a lens to adapt I believe that the C/Y 85/2.8 is similar in design to the 90/2.8 but can be adapted. I have the 85/2.8 and it's an nice compact lens, but I've recently acquired a Sonnar 100/2 that I like better so the 85/2.8 will be going on the B&S soon.

The Contax 90mm f2.8 for Contax G is probably one of the sharpest and most wonderful lenses ever made. Supposedly had a resolution of around 300 lp/mm. An amazing value if one could convert it and use it in Canon EF mount

Indeed a wonderful lens, maybe not the absolute sharpest, but pretty close.
Actually, there is a guy in Japan who converted one to am M42 mount, and then put it in a Canon. Unfortunately, the cost of doing so might not make it such an amazing value (especially when you can just get the Contax c/y 85/2.8 Sonnar which is very nearly the same lens.) Koji actually lives in Toronto (although he is obviously Japanese). I've been in touch with him regarding a big 50mm-ish test that will happen this spring. He's got all kinds of nice glass (as you see on his page) and he's generous about lending them and seems very interested in testing lenses. Maybe I'll try to get a copy of the 85/2.8 and we can shoot the 85 and 90 against each other... I really need to get in touch with him again. We had loose plans to get together for some traditional Japanese food and Shochu. Too bad you're not in Toronto, Lotus... (if I recall correctly, your better half is Japanese, like mine)

I'm located in the GTA (Brampton) and have the 85/2.8. As I said I'm probaby going to sell it, but I'm in no hurry if you need one for a test shoot.

Wonderful, Cal!

You'll be welcome to take part in the testing and festivities if/when it happens. We are thinking High Park at cherry blossom time.

Hahaha

My wide does not make so-called-sushi, though she is
a good cook with a sharp tongue so I stop writing about...

Very nice pics in High Park, cogitech.

Thanks KOJI! (I'll be in touch soon.)

My wife doesn't make sushi either. We actually don't eat it that often. Once you've eaten sushi in Nihon, it is difficult to appreciate the stuff they make here. We make a big meal of special Japanese food on New Years Day every year, but I get the job of rolling the maki

Why bother dismantling a Sonnar G 90 when the Contax 2.8/85 is -by admission of same Zeiss factory- the identical optical scheme?

And the Contax 85 is also cheaper.

BTW I own both lenses.

Very cool conversion, I had a fairly complete Contax G2 setup: the 21/28/45/90. All lenses were superb, the 28 losing out to the 21 but still a great lens.

The 90/2.8 Sonnar was a tremendous lens in all optical aspects, only let down by the cumbersome focusing at close range with the G2.

I am very pleased to see that someone has made a conversion of this lens - I wouldn't say no to one. In my opinion it is bettering the 85/2.8 Sonnar which I had with my Contax RX, though the 85 is no slouch it was mostly closet camping as I preferred the 85/1.4 and 60/2.8 for the midrange work. The Sonnar 85 is a very good lens but falls short of the 90, the latter being sharper, right out to the edges at full aperture, has better contrast and performed very well in backlit conditions. I would think the Sonnar 90 is on par with the Leica M90/2.8 and the E55/last version Elmarit R90/2.8 which I still own.

The 85 is absolutely not bad but not that exciting. I don't know about the asking prices for the Sonnar 85 but be they on the low side they still be good value for money.

All this talk about 85mm lenses made me go look around some some and I came across a Jupiter- 9 85/2. All I know about this lens is that it's Russian. The images look really nice on flickr, but that's not really saying anything academic about the lens.

Anyone w/ any experience?

(sorry, I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this lens and thought it'd be nicer to just turn the convo in here a little bit instead)
