Ruaha NP, Tanzania

Hello from Germany,
in October and early November I spent three unforgettable weeks in Southern-Tanzania. The national parks there are less well known than the parks in the North. I've been interested in documentaries and magazine articles about Africa's nature for a long time and have not seen much about this part of Tanzania. On the contrary there is a lot about the Ngongoro Crater, the migration in the Serengeti and Masai Mara, the Kili or the elephants of Amboseli. Nevertheless this area is one of the world's wildlife hotspots. In this post I want to show you the beauty and the wildlife of the Ruaha NP. In October, the rainy season is not far away. If you are lucky, there is no rain but a dramatic sky.

In the morning you must go out early. If you don't you miss half an hour of spectacular light.

An hour later the light is still good. I loved the mixture of hills, baobabs, big rocks and wildlife.

Kudus are quite common there.

Unfortunately the last rhino was killed 1986. The other members of the "Big Five" are common, the elusive leopard difficult to see. In four days we saw two prides of lion, one with cubs and one single male. This guy was the boss of a small pride.

Buffalo are widespread, too.

There are different types of accommodation. I think the expensive lodges are a rip off. A hut costs 20$ a night per person. The showers and toilettes are outside. They are a bit smelly but being in Africa I always lower the standard a bit. There is no fence around the site and you are close to the river. That's why there is a lot of wildlife around the camp, especially in dry season.

The next picture shows a banda from the inside.

I hope I watered your mouth a bit. The Ruaha is well worth a visit!

The first two captures are awesome. The light is absolutely perfect in both of them. What a dramatic sky in #1.
