First, I apologize for the poor quality of these images. I was handholding a Canon 100-400 at 400mm with a 1.4x on a 20D. I did not have time to set up a tripod as I jumped out of the car to capture this.
This deer was trying to walk across a frozen pond at Bosque. Unfotunately the ice was no thick enough to support him. The water was not that deep and the deer did finally make it across, but was clearly exhausted.

Yes, but barely. The last 10 yards the water was chest deep. When it finally made it to shore it laid down for a couple minutes then got up and walked away.
I have a thing about saving & protecting wildlife & even though I know deer aren't endangered, I still dislike the thought that it would suffer an untimely passing.
