Cool Rob, I agree. I have never seen any prop vortices this long.

Thanks, Leo!

Here's a couple more from the series. The last one isn't my favorite, quality wise, since the plane was getting into the low clouds, but the vortices are even longer.

I'm wondering if the screwtail vortices would have disappeared at a slower shutter?

Cool shots though, Rob! Very cool!!!

Hi Jim!

I've only had a few minutes to drop in the thread this week since my team is in the final throes of getting ready to move a data center over the Thanksgiving holiday

I just drop in and think "what the heck? Three new pages? !!!!"

Here's one of my few successful attempts to emulate you; 800mm, 1/90 of sec

Rob,

I didn't even notice the props at first, the vortices just dominate that photo. Great shot!

Thanks, Conor!

I was going through shots from a couple of weeks ago and looking at the thumbnails and EXIF and thought "oh, darn (well, close enough to what I was thinking) 1/250th, ruined". Glad I opened them up anyway.

Good morning, Jon!

You know, I was wondering that myself. I'm always torn on the look of airshow smoke. I actually prefer the texture of the smoke at a higher shutter speed; it looks better to me than at the lower speeds where the prop looks better but the smoke just loses all texture.

So the first one below (1/60th) I just don't care for, even though I got the full prop disk (yet another where I managed to luck in with the 800). The second one (1/320th) I like a bit better because the texture isn't quite washed out of the smoke.

So I wonder if maybe the vortices would have been less sharp and well defined at a lower shutter speed. Of course, I could just be trying to make myself feel better about forgetting to change the shutter speed!

You guys are killing me with the A-10 shots!!! I especially like the shots of the Avenger gun ripping off rounds, would be amazing to see/hear that in person (but not to be on the opposite end)!

Has anyone downloaded the Lightroom 3 Beta yet. I've been working with it for a couple of days and it looks pretty cool. Scott Kelby has some tutorials at NAPP on it. Speaking of NAPP, how many of us are members? In case you haven't run across it, NAPP is the acronym for National Association of Photoshop Professionals. My friend Scott Kelby thought it up and got it rolling. Scott is a master at recruiting and organizing talent for his brainchild. If you haven't met Scott, he's a free wheeling bundle of energy and a super fine Gentleman who just flat out loves photography and Photoshop. He has written numerous best sellers on both subjects, my office library contains most, if not all of his books. They are insightful, humorous easy reads and will get you up and running in Photoshop/Lightroom much sooner than trial the trial and error method I used in the early years.

Have you ever bought Photoshop/InDesign, etc., tutorial DVD's? I used to buy all kinds of them and they aren't inexpensive. Last year Scott came up with the idea and the means to launch "Kelby Training" on the web. He then went out and recruited some of the finest photographic and Adobe technical talent in the world to create tutorials for Kelby Training. A year's unlimited access to the training site is $159.00 for NAPP members. I paid more than that for one set of DVD tutorials. NAPP membership is $99 annually, $199 international and you get a monthly magazine that is first class and worth the membership fee by itself. The Kelby tutorial list grows on a daily basis, you might even see me in there sometime soon. They always have some goody bag of Scott's books or something as a perk when you join.

If you have an interest, go take a look, you'll be amazed at what is available. If by chance, you decide to join any or all of it, make sure you use this link to sign up:

http://www.photoshopuser.com/register.html&aid=nlylel&code=friend

I think we can parlay that into some benefits for our MA2A group down the line. Let me know what you think when you research it. The two memberships I wouldn't think of letting lapse, are Fred's and NAPP. If we ever do get a seminar together Scott would be a featured presenter, he's a wealth of knowledge and funny as can be. I'm thinking of inviting him to the Alliance Photo Pit next year, that'd be fun for all!

Dear Jon and Rob,

I know what you mean about the shutterspeed/smoke thing. Especially if you get just the right back or side light with a higher settting, it can be really dramatic. This one is around 1/200th....

Wow, and you worry about prop blur, hows about bullet blur? Tha A-10, is a real success story.
I was talking to one of the pilots, and he was telling me about how the burnt gasses from the Gatling, would flame out the engine on the left side. Don't know if it's true, but there sure is a lot of smoke.

More info here:
On the bird: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-10_Thunderbolt_II
On the gun itself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger

[...] Regarding flameouts: The A-10 engines were initially susceptible to flameout when subjected to gases generated in the firing of the gun. When the GAU-8 is being fired, the smoke from the gun can make the engines stop, and this did occur during initial flight testing. Gun exhaust is essentially oxygen-free, and is certainly capable of causing flame-outs of gas turbines. The A-10 engines have a self sustaining combustion section. When the gun is fired the igniters come on to ensure no flame out occurs. [...]

Great shots everyone!

Jim, I haven't tried LR3 myself but I've heard good things about it. A lack of time and recent shots makes that I can't experiment with the beta, but I'm looking forward to the full version.

JW,

I have started using LR3 - forced to by needing 7D RAW handling capabilities - having only used LR2 for a 6 months or so. Most of my image work has been done in PS as my work involves the manipulation of microscope images. I'm getting the hang of LR and I can see that for general photography it is an amazing product. For a change, reasonably priced too!

I still keep an eye on Scott Kelby et al on the PhotoshopUserTV website as they have a habit of coming up with little bits of information that help the workflow and can often be related to LR. And yes, they are funny guys.

carrg1954 -> Nice shot of Connie. I still remember the sound of those engines as she powered past. I must try and find the documentary mentioned early in the thread about her restoration.

Scott.

Greetings All.... Absolutely awesome photos in this thread and I've been following it for some time. I'm particularly enjoying the A-10 photos, of which there are so many excellent one's. I'll make a couple of contributions, both from the recent Aviation Nation Air Show at Nellis AFB. Always happy to hear C&C's. Peter A.
