And the 800PF is small and light; a vast improvement over my old 500 f4 with TC. Add the second Z9 and the 180-600 and maybe the 24-120 for shots on the ramp and it's perfect.

Gorgeous images, Rob. Very well done.

What do you see as the pros/cons of the 800PF and the 180-600 compared to each other? If you could only bring one and had to pick between those two, which would you choose and why?

I'm just starting sell all my older gear and migrate to mirrorless, and one of those two probably should be in my future.

Hi Rodolfo! Long time no talk

Actually, as you can see from what I posted, I really prefer to fill the frame with the plane as opposed to more sky and smoke and smaller plane. Given that, I favor long lenses. For this weekend, 2/3 of my pictures were taken with the 180-600 and the remaining were taken with the 800. So generally speaking, smaller planes went on the 800. I actually had a z 1.4 and a 2.0 in the bag but used neither. I was right on the taxiway but if I'd been at Barksdale where you're farther from the box, I would have used one or the other.

The 800 is too much lens for formations but great for the smaller planes.. At the same time, as Jim has said, pictures of planes at the far and of the runway were impossible because of the heat shimmer. As long as they were up in the air, I was fine on the 800.

As a general purpose lens, I would go with the 180-600 as a more generally useful lens. Unless you're going to get into tiny bird pictures, the 800 is probably not going to get used as much. And there were a lot of pictures where I just picked up the zoom because things were bigger and close. I particularly put my info on each picture I posted so you can get some idea of how the two lenses worked for me. And honestly, if I wanted pictures on the taxiway of aircraft, the 800 as pretty useless. Way to close .

As I said, I prefer to fill the frame with the plane, even if I lose a wingtip here or there (as you can see). And even there, the zoom worked for most of the airshow.

Of course, for me, I took both (and I actually had a D850 with a 24-120 for ramp pictures). But as a general purpose lens, I would get the 180-600 unless you're a nutcase like me

Hope that helps!

Rob

Great imagery and great analysis Rob. I had a pass for Sunday but decided to bag it after a long Friday and Saturday of shooting. We need to catch up and shoot something together soon. Please give my best to Nan.

Hi Jim!

Was hoping I'd run into you on Saturday; too bad we didn't connect. Was actually a nice show.

Yeah, indeed, we do need to get together and do some shooting. I hear that CenTex is back on but it looks like a pretty minor affair, unfortunately. But yes, let's get together!

Nan says hi.

Aw heck, I might as well put up a few more I just finished (the first world problem of fast cameras and big cards).

We'll figure out something Rob. I got the final word on anything at AFW this year, it's a no. Amazon told them that they could do whatever they needed as far as the airspace, and they would graciously only charge them a half a million an hour for every hour it's closed. We had a good run, lot's of fun, lot's of work, great memories, but it's time to stick a fork in it.

Speaking of AFW, Chandler and I were exhausted and hungry, but we saw one more shot before we left the field ................

Yeah, I kinda figured it was over. But the weirdest thing; I was looking on Milavia last week and they had a listing for Alliance in October for the T’birds and no other acts that wasn’t there last month. Thought it was odd and probably some sort of mixup.

That was a real commitment from the Thunderbirds, and Alliance was hoping to put something together over those dates, but they just couldn't do it.

I made the Fort Worth show on Saturday, I left before the Blues did their thing. I Didn't feel like fighting the outbound traffic or staying until they kicked us out...

Hopefully, I can make more than one airshow this year!

That Vampire sure cut the north corner close!
