Even though I know it goes without saying, make sure everyone you love knows you love them. Don't pass any opportunity to express your love to family and friends. When I saw my son's number on my iPhone Saturday afternoon, I was certain he was calling to ask me to borrow the lawn mower. You never know my friends...
It doesn't "go without saying", actually... it's one of the best pieces of advice one can ever give. You all were spared, by a whisker, and I, too, give thanks for your blessing. But many others are not spared, and did not get or heed that good advice, and many a tragedy is made worse by regret. Purely preventable regret, too, which is even more painful.
We've spent the past couple of days with a friend and client who was told two months ago that he has roughly one more year to live, with terminal cancer that's unlikely to be curable. He, too, is blessed, because his personal affairs were a mess. He may beat the cancer or not, but his estate planning is now impeccable, he's had a chance to tie off loose ends, and several critical conversations have taken place with his children. It's going to be hellishly difficult from this point forward, but it would have been oh-so-much worse if he'd gone with no warning.
God bless you and your family, Jeff. Again and again and again.
