Glenn, I think it would be really neat to see the Blue Angels perform alongside the micro jet.

Hi Colin:
Youre right about that! Justin (microjet pilot) was the flight instructor for two of the current Blue Angel pilots when they were all stationed at NAS Kingville, and we tried back in March to do just that at the Kingsville airshow but the WX didnt allow it.

We had to settle for Rob and Greg a couple days later

D810 first impressions? Pics looks great but so do D800 files from you. Can you tell any difference yet in working with them?

First impressions are favorable, Glenn, but that's mostly due to the handling differences: the image quality of the D800 is so good, I think you'd have to work to find where the D810 images are superior. But the new grip, improved autofocus, bigger buffer, and faster frame rate all add up to a better shooting experience. A2A: it'll kill. Airshows: remains to be seen.

I need to spend some quality time with the manual...

There's also a bit of a debate going on about the first iteration of Lightroom's handling of the D810 raw files with some camera profiles. It can lead to posterization. If it's true, I'm sure Adobe will correct it soon.

The more astute of you (or those with simply too much time on their hands) may have noticed that there has been no report of a White Ensign Day (WED) this year. This is a good thing. You may remember that the first WED came about some years ago as a means of overcoming some mobility / transport difficulties that where preventing Sir Donald Grey from attending the annual air show at Yeovilton, UK – even though he lives only a few miles distant.

Last year's WED was notable because Sir Donald had his hip fixed and was able to walk about and (shudder) drive his new car! The resulting mayhem is a matter of record, and is detailed in these hallowed pages. Since then we’ve been treated to details of Sir Donald’s latest exploits, involving R/C drones and sheep rustling. Also last year, Sir Donald and Lady Grey kindle gave me permission to escort two charming ladies to the air show at East Fortune in Scotland. That was a great success.

This year the show at East Fortune was on the same day as the show at Yeovilton. My services being no longer required at Grey Towers, Sir Donald and Lady Grey gave their kind permission for me to once again offer my services for a ladies day at East Fortune. Imagine my shock (OK – horror) when the same two ladies took me up on the offer ….. and added another two!

The pre-game show. In which the rush to the fence line was followed by frenzied preparations for the coming events.....

The lady in pink is Jane Coltman – immediate past chair person of our camera club, and the chief photographer on two of the local news papers. The lady in the middle is Laine Baker – also a camera club stalwart and Jane's best photo buddy. The other lady is Jane's sister Claire – already trying to distance herself from this madness. We where later joined by one of Jane's other sisters. The whole event went swimmingly, with only a little rain and variable cloud as a backdrop. I took over 4K frames and was cream crackered by the end. So far I've managed to find a decent Red Arrows crossing shot. Hurrah – at long last – it's only taken four years!

Just for paranoid grins, I have been shooting the D800 with a CF and an SD card in the slots. The addition of the SD card makes the buffer speed about the equivalent of a 1D as I remember it. I did my aerial shoot yesterday with both cards in the slots and it was painfully slow. I found myself in that situation where you keep pressing the button but nothing happens. Redundancy is nice, but in the 800, I don't know that the trade off is worth it.

Smooth, cool air yesterday morning, but awfully moist and hazy.

Is it my imagination, or are we losing our rights on every front at an accelerated pace? I've alluded to the tightening down at KTKI, although we can still drive fossil powered vehicles while sipping large sugary drinks, there seems to be more and more stuff like this going on.

If the EAA doesn't come unglued over this, they aren't worth their dues!

This is an excerpt from the article:

"The FAA says that because federal funds are used to build and maintain airports, the use of airport facilities for non-aeronautical uses amounts to a subsidy for those uses."

This is how the gov't expands control where they have no business. Once you let them pay one dollar for something, they think they own all contiguous resources near it. This is such an absurd overreach, it is sickening! Next they will take control of the parking areas to control what type vehicles can enter an airport.

Here's the goofy thought: Aircraft maintenance, such as removing an aircraft engine is not readying an aircraft to use the runway. Installing it may be, but not the removal. Using this interpretation, they would kick maintenance facilities from the airports. Now that sounds like something our gov't would do..."Hello, I am from the gov't and I am here to help".

Exactly Wrei! And, what about aircraft that are too large to build/restore anywhere but a hangar, like warbirds, any twin engine. and most GA singles that can't easily have the wings removed. This is the way it's going across the board, not just in aviation. The government has us so polarized that each ideology/economic strata cheers when the other gets some right taken away, while neither side realizes that, one by one, no one will have any rights.

Did you ever think that, in the USA, a citizen would have to be worried about speaking out on anything, due to sanctions/government/ideaological redress? Well we are there Buddy. Seems "tolerance" is a very subjective concept.

My first ever air to air shots taken at Leapfest in Rhode Island. The shots were taken from a RI National Guard Blackhawk media flight. Shortly after I took these my Nikon D3 died, it didn't like the rain that was getting sucked into the cabin of the aircraft. So much for weather sealing.

I dunked my Canon Rebel in the Frio River once...left it alone and let it dry as Jim says, and it worked just fine. Never had one side effect of getting wet.
