I just dropped in after being scarce for a few days...looks like everyone decided that this is the Topic-Free forum while I was gone...

And, no, I'm not complaining: far from it.

Makes great sense Ray. And the water bottle.........ain't digital great? Back in the day, that was an oversight that would have cost five grand to remove from a transparency.

I said something to Sheila the other night about how I would hate to be shooting film at this stage of my career. Film was a lot of work and uncertainty when you think about it. Given the volume that I shoot these days, I would easily be dropping 100K on film, not to mention processing. That'll buy a lot of gear.

Last night an older gentleman (relative to my age) taking photos with a compact Nikon came over to talk with me. He was an old studio photographer who had his own studio and lab. We talked about film, and he told me how he would be in the lab for hours developing color prints. I have only done B&W, but I can imagine.

Ray,

what's your thinking behind having a D810 and a 5DIII?

Regards,

Mark

Well, a very wise man told me the D810 shines at ISO 400 and lower, and when it comes to dynamic range, it is spectacular. I wanted a second camera with high ISO and high frames per second. The obvious answer was the 7D II. When I read about experienced photographers who had used the focus system on 1Dx, 1DIV and 5DIII cameras were having focus problems, both still and action, I backed off the 7DII for now. This concern was followed up with reports they sent their cameras to CPS and they actually had repairs completed. I still plan to get a 7DII, it will be later.

Everything I read about the 5DIII highlighted the high ISO and focus capability. So when I do football, I will take both the D810/5DIII. The 5DIII will be aimed at the field action from the sidelines (until I get a 7DII) while the D810 will focus on the crowd and halftime shots. (The new Nikon 300 f/4E VR PF may change this.)

The great use for the D810 and 36 Mpix is it allowed the guys at Helping Hands to crop the heck out of the photos for the posters created for the Canstruction event.

Exaaaactly Ray! People always pipe up with, "well just how much more does anyone need?" the simple answer is, like power in an airplane, how much more can I get? I was fiddling with AFW 2014 files from the 1DX yesterday, and they will be fine for their intended use, but when you whack one of those in half you don't have much left. Do the same with a D810 file and you end up with more than a full res 1DX. Kind of nice to have that flexibility. I'm still on the fence about the 50 mp Canon, maybe I'll pass and just be happy with the 810's until something worth going after pops up. We'll see what the reality based reviews look like, or maybe I'll borrow one from Canon and it will convince me one way or the other.

BTW hats off to you for your photographic growth, and your servant heart, well done sir.

Thanks Jim, it is a bit of win-win. They get the photos they need and I get a little self-realization in a chosen field. When I realized those were my photos on the foam board, that large, I was surprised at first, but then the reality that I can do this photography stuff and be good set in. Brings a lot of happiness to these old bones.

Here's some interesting facts on the new 5DS & SR. The low pass filter is actually in both cameras, the SR model simply allows the photographer to bypass that filter when shooting scenes where optimum sharpness is desired. Now that is pretty cool. The second feature that has been brought to my attention is a redesign of the mirror mechanism, supposedly to eliminate the weird pixel blur Steve and I spent so much time trying to analyze after we discovered it on our Nikon D800 cameras.

Interesting, veeeeeery interesting!

Today I was at the fuel pump at GTU and next to me pulled up this sweet Baron with killer black paint and beautiful winglets, and sounded like some hot rods under the cowlings. I was chatting up the guy at the pump working my way to getting him a business card.....fast forward a couple minutes and the card is presented - he looks at it for a sec and goes "hey i know you, i'm Joe Dobransky"....

"The Great Dobransky"! What super guy. Kitty Hawk is now a neighborhood named "The Landings", but sadly there is nowhere to land. Joe is married to a darling lady with two kids now, a whole new life.

During that time period Joe and I rivaled many third world air forces as far as inventory went...............not to mention Glenn's collection.....

2008-2012 kind of shook that up for numerous reasons.....

Just backed up my DBI folder a few days ago, it is 3.62 GB, and those were relatively low res capture days.

These days are history for sure.....................
