Outstanding additions to the Crosswind Archives Jay! Did you go by yourself, or with a group? How's the atmosphere at Nellis these days?

Just a question thinking of getting me a 70-200 4.0 I think it the most easy lens to use when photographing out of a plane would like a 2.8 but price wise the 4.0 suits better .
And i think quality wise it's also a great lens any thoughts ??

Caveat. I haven't shot with the F4 or F4IS so can't comment on that particular lens.

The F4 has a good reputation, as does the IS version. Both are lighter and smaller than their 2.8 counterparts.
I'm not sure how much of an advantage that would be for air 2 air stuff in terms of making it easier to counteract the vibration of the airframe, or if the heavier lens makes the difference there.

Jay's images that he's posted so far all look like they were taken from off base locations.

Glad folks are enjoying the stuff from RF...

We had five of our AZ guys up there on kind of overlapping itineraries from Monday through Friday afternoon. Two were able to go on base for Tuesday's Media Day having been vetted through our blog however, I was not one of them. In the end, this was fine as the "no shoot" list this year included the F-22 and the B-2 from any angle beyond the 3/9 line.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Mark is correct. I pretty evenly divided my time between Cheyenne Ave in the mornings and LV Blvd in the afternoons.

I did end up spending part of one morning at a Toyota dealer though due to a gas cap/fueling system failure on my 4Runner. Lost some time, but it was by far the worst Wx morning of the week.

Jay,

Few folks I know from the UK were out there. Not sure how many of them were on base for the media day, but at least one of them was on a tanker ride on the Wednesday - his 8th attempt to get a ride.

I was in Las Vegas this past Thursday and Friday. While I wasn't at Red Flag shooting, I can tell you the daytime Wx was not photographer friendly. The overcast was awful much of the time. The image IQ Jay got in that mess is nothing short of amazing. That being said, I should learn to never be surprised at the images Jay produces - regardless of conditions. Excellent work Jay.

BTW, the b&w conversion on the Strike Eagle overhead pass is my favorite thus far. The post work you performed on the T-Birds is nothing short of phenomenal

had been archive diving looking for something and came across these, which I'm pretty sure I hadn't posted here, first with the 300mm f/2.8 AI-S, second with the old 80-400 AFD

Jan-Arie,I've had the 4is for a few years, and its a great lens. I sometimes think I should go to the 2.8ii is (generally winter time when the light is crap) but money always stops me and there is no difference in iq.
regards

Great shots from Nellis!

I kind of like the overcast shots, at least when a little blue sky makes it in frame. It makes for a more dynamic frame, plus it's just a giant softbox.

On the topic of clouds....
