Jim, I've used the 5D for over seven years and found a basic full frame to be an excellent learning tool. In many ways the natural successor is the 6D and I've been able to have a good look as one of my buddies recently got one. Results have been every bit as good as expected – IQ all that one could reasonably hope for.
I'd also like to put in a shout for the second division L lenses. The 70-200 f4 L IS is light, robust, has great IQ, and plays well with the 1.4 extender and works well with the 6D.
The 24-105 L IS is a very solid performer and the DXO lens corrections (and LR?) take care of the problems that have worried some in the past.
The 17-40 L is a gem IMHO. It's small (ish), light, and covers everything from normal to ultra wide.
