Jim, I've used the 5D for over seven years and found a basic full frame to be an excellent learning tool. In many ways the natural successor is the 6D and I've been able to have a good look as one of my buddies recently got one. Results have been every bit as good as expected IQ all that one could reasonably hope for.
I'd also like to put in a shout for the second division L lenses. The 70-200 f4 L IS is light, robust, has great IQ, and plays well with the 1.4 extender and works well with the 6D.
The 24-105 L IS is a very solid performer and the DXO lens corrections (and LR?) take care of the problems that have worried some in the past.
The 17-40 L is a gem IMHO. It's small (ish), light, and covers everything from normal to ultra wide.

I had two dusk shots to do this evening and we have a little dry front moving through, 25/35G40. I decided to pull my old Gitzo Studex out of mothballs. Put my RRS 55 on top and it was like I had the D810 bolted to The Ronald Reagan. Sure don't miss hauling the Gitzo around, but it was worth it's weight in gold this evening.

Might I suggest the Nikon D610 and the 28-300. That way, he can find out where he shoots the most, and you can go from there with other lenses. Nikon also has a 70-200 f/4 lens, if you know he'll shoot long.

The Nikon D3300/3200 and 5300/5200/5100 series will use all the G lenses. What they can't do is autofocus the D lenses or earlier, as they don't have the screw to drive the lens. The lens will still work with the camera, you'd just have to manually focus it Now if you want to try "old school" AI, AI-S, and older lenses, there's this thread on the Nikon Forum that has a little bit of a following...

No problem.

One thing to bear in mind is that they models are more expensive than a Rebel or similar, but having used your equipment, these are probably a better starting point for him than the entry level cameras.

Also, some of the cheaper Nikon models can only take 1 type of lens that would rule out being able to use your Nikon lenses with his camera.

Jim, I second the thought that the Canon 7D II and the Nikon D7100 are very good choices when paired with the f4 lenses from either camp. They both give you top-flight AF and good ISO performance. A combo of 17-40 f4 (Canon)/16-35 f4 (Nikon), 70-200 f4 and 300 f4 would make a killer starter package for someone who appreciates good glass without breaking the bank or the back. Throw in a 50 1.8 from either camp for a bit of low light practice and I think he could learn a lot.

If you look at FF, I would lean toward the Nikon D610 because of the AF specs.

No matter what you choose, it should be a lot of fun watching him progress! :-)

Thanks Everyone!

I'm leaning toward the Nikon 7100, that website Mark linked certainly leads one to believe that it's a great camera in talented hands. Chandler's interest seems to be spinning up, after his summer internship, but I hesitate to get 4/5 grand invested in this until we move a little further down the line. The beauty is, whatever body he ends up with, he can reach into any of three rolling cases and choose lenses and accessories. Wish I had a deal like that when I began. Of course, if I had had then, what I have now, I would have probably stood there in a state of shock and not been able to make a decision.

One thing I do know, he's going to need the battery pack. The D800/D819 really felt weird out of the box with no grip/battery pack. I'm so used to the extra mass, it makes them feel like point and shoots.

A wise choice Jim. And I too would not appreciate as much some of the lenses I've been able to shoot with if I did not have to scratch and scrape for them.
