I do believe that low B-17 shot is a production photo from the "Don't Mess with Texas" advert from a few years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A841UcrWhGI

Nice Jay,
How are you removing your back grounds, layers, masks ?
My edges never look to sharp and straight but yours look really good.

A big thank you to all who currently serve and those who have served in the past.

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

I recently had the privilege of documenting an Honor Flight of WWII Veterans to Washington D.C.
This was the 11th flight put together by the Northeast Indiana Chapter. www.hfnei.org/

The Veterans from this flight are featured in this group photo taken at the WWII Memorial.

The original is over blue sky...

...so that's fairly easy to select with the wand or color range selection tools. Don't forget to catch a bit of the area inside of a canopy where you should be able to see through to the background. Nothing kills a project like this faster than panels of pure white in a canopy where you should see blue sky (or in this case, flag) through the canopy.

"Refine Edge" helps clean up around the aircraft and inside of canopies.
"Invert Selection" flips the selection from sky to aircraft.
"CTL + J" copies and promotes the selected aircraft to their own layer
Open your background (US Flag) as a new file
"CTL A" selects the entire image
"CTL C" copies the entire image
Go back to your working image and select the layer just BELOW the aircraft
"CTL V" pastes the US Flag in as a new layer UNDER the aircaft
Try different BLEND MODES and OPACITY levels until the balance feels right. I generally like "OVERLAY" or "SOFT LIGHT" in order to hold the transparency of canopies and spinning props.

Ah, thinking it was two separate airplanes, thanks for the info, my layer skills stink but want to practice some more.

Thanks Bill. Just began working composites this week, and Jay's pumped me to try another.

Here is a composite image involving multiple files, some gradient masks, and other fun. You can make them as easy or complicated as you want.

I see on FB that Angry Al is back in Oz; maybe now he'll have time show us a few of the images he captured at HQ and Alliance.

Meanwhile, I got a chance to fly my new DJI Phantom II Vision quadcopter today. Test reel is here. The II has a built-in video/stills camera that produces 1080p30 video and 14MP stills. It's well designed and well built; feels like a tank at about 2.5 pounds flight weight. It's got GPS auto-hover for ease of operation and a really cool 'go home' feature if the comm link between controller and copter is lost (demonstrated in the video). You can control the camera---and even the 'copter, to some extent---with the smartphone app by tipping and rolling the phone; the app also downlinks real-time FPV video and displays it on the phone, which clips to the radio controller.

It's a very cool toy, and a lot of fun. You can see from the video that smooth piloting plays a large role in how useful the resulting footage can be: I have a long way to go in that regard. I can think of a dozen places within an hour's drive where I can't wait to try this out.

p.3972 #20 · Mustang Air to Air: The Sequel

Hi Guys ,

Yep finally managed to get home, complete with a few Camaro bits stuffed in my luggage..

Last long haul flight was from LA to Sydney, approx 14hrs in a 380, I'd purchased a seat in what I was told was the Wing exit row, where there was a row of seats missing in front of mine so I could stretch my legs on the flight home.
Unfortunately the exit row I ended up with was on the top floor of the 380 , & the exit was the rear upper door. Result was the second last row of seats under the tail, 14hrs of left n right tail corrections all the way home, Im still feeling punch drunk.

Finally got all my files loaded so in the next few days I'll post a few images.

A big thanks to all who attended MA2A get together at HQ, thanks again to all those who took the time to show me some really great hospitality and answer a lot of dumb Aussie questions ( and coach me on ordering US food ).

Al
