Having recently seen space shuttle Atlantis close up, I couldn't resist the temptation to see the Russian Buran shuttle while I was in Germany. Seeing up close the similarities and differences in the shuttles built by both countries was fascinating. This is Buran OK-GLI, their version of Enterprise used for the approach and landing tests. Unlike ours which was a pure glider and had to be lofted on the back of a 747, OK-GLI had engines attached so that it could take off under its own power. They did 25 manned flights testing the autopilot, as the actual space worthy Buran made its successful maiden and only flight unmanned.
