Sorry I missed your call back today, things got a little frantic in Houston this afternoon. I regretted not being able to shoot some cool images, but was not looking forward to donning a fireproof suit for 5 hours in the Texas heat and Houston humidity. My hat is off to the oilfield workers, between the fire/blowout danger and the toxic gas monitoring, not to mention the risk of losing digits/limbs, they deserve every penny they make and then some.

I was on a rig last year where the crew chief told me if my monitor went off, it would be unlikely that I could move fast enough to avoid being killed by the lethal fumes. That was encouraging................

FYI, I shot 800 aerials last weekend in winds from 15G22. to 18G28, temps were 99 to 102, so the air was really churning. Not one single frame was soft. The Kenyon 4x4 really earns it's keep on days like that. I was looking forward to shooting out of my client's new 429 today, that has to be a great platform in the right hands.

Steve, what do you use the parallel image pair for?

I have a stereo viewer I use with the parallel pairs, Erich. It has no lenses, just mirrors in a housing with a steering mechanism that allows you to aim your eyes at images that are farther apart than your eyeballs are.

No thoughts on the Sony video camera? I know it's not 4K, but I'm not convinced that I care. The features, quality, and codec flexibility are really appealing .

Sorry, not qualified to comment on your choice, Jim. You say it's a video camera? Made by Sony?

Jim,

Surprised with your range of Canon gear that you have not looked at the Eos Cinema range of cameras. I believe these are 4K capable.

All this talk of stereo pairs reminded me I wanted to give this another try with a formation.
I'm not sure even 11fps is fast enough for these guys, as it feels like there's too much separation.
Those of you that can do these, how comfortable is the image to view?

Erich

Works for me, Erich, with only a little visual discomfort and a ringing headache...

...but, seriously, it's OK. I've never tried to do stereo pairs of formation flights: there's usually too much relative movement between the airframes for it to work out. But this is the Blues we're talking about here, so relative motion is just not an option.

They really are almost unbelievable. When I was overlaying a number of images from this pass to pick out the best pair I was amazed that the only differences I saw were the fuselages changing perspective. Individual parts between multiple planes would overlay perfectly.

Works for me too, Erich :-)

All these flying kitty cats are just lovely by the way. Just in case nobody has pointed that out.

Dangit; TOP again!

Here, have a banner being picked up.

Did you know that 15 minutes could add massive amounts of drag in flight?
