Hi Mark. Yes, I am the kid on the right in the plaid pants (uggghhh). Since I was actually born in England (another long story of which I know few details), I can't say with any certainty where in Germany our family is from. I have heard the names Dusseldorf and Hanover mentioned several times, and after reading the Google translation of something one of my cousins in Germany wrote about the family history, I would say Hanover is home to my mother. My father's birthplace is unknown at this time. My mother moved to England in 1949 to work and this is where she met and married my dad. We moved here in February of 1963 when I was just barely 4 years old, so reading anything in german is extremely difficult, hence my use of Google Translate, and it leaves me guessing on the context of the translation. Fifty one years later and most of my family's history is unknown, especially on my father's side.
After typing in my last name in Facebook, I found 356 other Giersbergs around the world. Most are obviously in Germany, but then there was Poland, Denmark, France and in the U.S., there were Giersbergs in South Alabama (I am in N. Alabama), Georgia, northern Florida, New York, Illinois or Indiana (I can't remember which), Iowa, Utah and Missouri (my older brother lives in St. Louis, but there were others in Missouri as well) and Utah. The Giersberg name goes all the way back to May 13, 1603. I guess that is when the name was first written down somewhere for posterities sake. And that is where things stand right now. My cousin in Germany is doing some research, so we will see where that goes.
