I wish I lived closer JW!

Had the privilege to stand at Skips ribbon poles - wow! is all I can say. When he screamed by was definitely the most my heart has ever raced at an airshow...

He broke down during the practice show so I didnt get to scout it and I envisioned a fisheye shot, but the 10.5 really turned out to be way to wide and it lost the impact of "near-ness"

Me too Glenn, I'm sure that we'd think up some cool great stuff to do! I've been in that position for Sean's double ribbon cut routine and it is just tough to convey it photographically. Really wide and you lose the excitement, much tighter and you just have a cool plane shot. Somewhere in the 24-70 there is just the right focal length.

One of the first things I noticed about the D800 was the ability to capture those subtle rays at the end of the day, as seen in the last image I posted. I still am amazed at the capabilities of that camera, and for half the cost of any of my other bodies. The D800's capture about 80% of my work these days.

Guess thats why we keep trying the same thing over and over eh JW? I'm not sure standing at the pole is the place to be either.

Agreed on the D800 - i even shot some of the airshow with it last weekend. My D300 files make me want to puke now.

That was the first big air show that I had the 800mm for. Sure drew a lot of attention. Must be why Canon gave me such a good ($11,887.95) deal on it. While the price was no deal, the fact that they snuck me the first production model to land in the US was appreciated.

Hey guys, a few from last weekend's D-Day 70th Anniversary show at Duxford. Good show, first time seeing the RAF Typhoon with D-Day invasion stripes, a great tribute!

Jim / Glenn,

How about this setup for that shot?

Camera 1 - mounted to a spike mounted ball head in the ground. Fisheye or 10mm lens. Right in the centre of the poles, manually focussed. Pocketwizard receiver used to fire camera.

Camera 2 - 24-70 lens, with a Pocketwizard transceiver fitted to fire camera 1.

Camera 3 - Gopro mounted to the top of 1 of the poles, looking towards the rope.

Camera 4 - Gopro worn by 1 of the pole holders. Have this guy on opposite pole to to the pole mounted gopro.

Good stuff James. I actually prefer the Typhoon with D-Day stripes to the 29 Squadron display jet.

Bummer for RIAT attendees: the Vulcan wasn't given a demo slot and the team has declined to attend as a static display.

If the only flying Vulcan can't get air time at RIAT, they must really have a stellar lineup...

...or is it politics?

There's a good chance I'll be going. I need to break in my Nikon 200-400 :-) I won't know for sure until the beginning of that week, as we'll have family n from out of town.
