I just set up a Monday meeting at VanBortel to ink our deal on the Turbo Skylane. This is the end of the Cessna 182 production run and there are three left in the world that are factory new, all sitting in Arlington, Texas. This will come as no surprise to you who know me well, we have made arrangements to send the plane to paint and interior immediately. I think the paint and interior department at Cessna (piston) studied under the Stevie Wonder school of design, yuck!

I thought Van Bortel would have a stroke when I told him my plan, he laughed and said Harrison Ford just bought one of them and did exactly the same thing. I couldn't get the paint and burgundy velour interior off of and out of my '81 Skylane fast enough. I guess they have always been varying degrees of plastic and ugly.

I'm going to use the time to get my instrument/commercial written out of the way, fly it for a few hours to get familiar with the buttons and displays, then call the guys who send an instrument instructor to your location for 10 days and make sure you are rated prior to their departure.

Thanks, Jan-Arie. Here goes.

This is "Chuckie," a B17G that was the property of the Military Aviation Museum. Tomorrow it departs for its new home on the west coast.

Jerry, this is gorgeous. An HDR shot?

And Jim, I thought I had figured out that congratulations were in order on the Pilatus. So congratulations!

But then where does the Turbo Skylane fit in? Totally missed you were ordering that too! So double congratulations! I sure hope I can make it down for Alliance one of these years and check out Headquarters.

I can use the tent that Jo isn't going to need.

I'll leave my stake marks in place, then ;-)

I totally missed the fact (?) they are stopping production of the 182.... Really?

Thanks Mark! The Turbo Skylane fits in because I loved my 182 and JR wants me to have a brand spanking new one. From a practical standpoint, (and I realize that the tab on the new 182 opens a world of aircraft possibilities, but I reasoned through all of that when I bought and refurbished my '81) I make a lot of trips that 160 knot, four seat piston single with air conditioning is perfect for. Also perfect for teaching six Grandchildren how to fly (after they tailwheel qualify in the Cub), and decked out the way this one will be with all glass, long range tanks, a custom and very comfortable interior, it'll be a perfect HQ to 500 nautical ride. The PC 12 will obviously be my most anywhere in the country ship, but JR has different needs entirely and really never cares if he touches the yoke.

So are you going to be JR's 'corporate' pilot, Jim? However you figure it, those are a pair of sweet rides.

Yup Lady Jo, Cessna is ceasing production of the Skylane. George VanBortal bough the final 17 of them and has three ('er two) left. He is keeping number 17 and putting a cover on it for posterity.

Funny, I have three friends all owned 182's, all are flying turbine twins now and they all say they wish they had never sold their Skylanes. It's an airplane that people love to love.

Thanks Zim! Nope, JR's pilot needs will be far beyond anything I have an interest in tackling, and that would look too much like "work".

Nope, but it looks like I am changing the reason I have a camera in my hand every day. Weird to think about, but with a little discipline I think I can get into it.

I appreciate the comments. I started getting serious about aviation photography -- and especially warbirds -- last October and that called for seeing the subjects in a very different way than those I had been photographing before. The outstanding photography, and the general atmosphere of discussions in this forum, has helped a lot during my months of lurking and learning. So, thanks to all of you.

Mark, no it is not an HDR, either in the sense of multiple exposures or a single image sent through an HDR processing program. It is a single, hand-held shot with some stylizing techniques I've been working on.

Jerry

Hi Jerry
If that image is one just by popping your head above the parapet, please pop up a bit higher. I can assure you that you will get a very warm welcome here and all the help you want.

The standard of work here is absolutely outstanding and I have learnt so much by seeing what can be achieved. My personal bar has been raised by my friends here. They are an inspirational bunch of guys & gals.

I too send another round of thanks to them all and to you for adding to my knowledge.

Welcome & greetings from Somerset UK
