Here's a few from the SARL race in Terrell this last Saturday.

Nice series, Jo. I heard another ISAP member say this week that the Piaggio is pretty quiet. That's certainly not been my experience. I wonder if they've been getting new, quieter props lately?

Maybe. It certainly didn't sound like the buzz-saw I was expecting, although it didn't sound quite like a regular plane either.

On the subject of sound; the SARL folks were approached a few days before the race by the sound engineers working on the new 'Planes' film for Disney. The upshot of it was that the sound guys came to Terrell on the Friday and recorded a bunch of SARL plane noises as extra foley for the film! In particular, our Race 13 (a Berkut) was recorded and they said it would likely get used as a sound double for Ishani, the canard character in the film. So when you go to see it, listen to the sound of Real Air Racers!

I'm surprised they're still doing post-production sound on a film due out so soon. But very cool, and I'll listen for the Berkut.

No planes, but was out working on my photography class homework tonight(shooting B&W film and going to learn how to process it). Longest lens I had with me was the 105 f/2.5 manual focus. Went to climb the tower there to get my bird's eye view shots. Got those done, was talking to someone who also climbed the tower, and he was telling me about the deer he got pictures of a couple weeks ago, from the tower. He leaves, I continue looking out the tower, don't see any deer, and finally go down, and start walking the path back to the parking lot.

What looked like a bird house down low caught my eye, so I went over to look at it a little closer, and discovered it is actually a bee nesting block. No bees came out of it, so all well and good. Turned to leave, and found myself looking a doe not more than 20 feet from me. Digital camera was in the bag, without a lens on it. Managed to get the bag open, get the digital camera out, put the 105 on it, and start shooting. The doe just kept right on munching like I wasn't even there. Finally, she crossed the path in front of me, now about 12 feet away, then sauntered down into the tall grass on the other side. Once she was far enough away, I quietly walked away totally stunned that I was that close. I was shaking all the way back to the car from the excitement of having been so close... no crops.

I know you guys would have liked to have had clearer skies in Seattle, but I kind of like the atmosphere you created in your images.

Thanks, Jim. Rather evocative of the miserable weather our boys had to deal with over England and the Continent back in the day, wouldn't you say?

Question for the Nikon shooters here: if I wanted to get into off-camera portable flash gear, which of the Nikon strobes would you recommend, and why? I'd be triggering it/them from a D800 and/or a D7100.
