Thanks, Niall.

BTW, in a senior moment I referred to the lens as a 40-70 zoom. It's not, of course: it's the 24-70mm f/2.8.

Hey Steve:
were you manually focusing during the air to air video or autofocus?

I was using the contrast detect AF for the A2A video. I couldn't see what I was shooting, remember.

Today was the dedication of the Colorado Freedom Memorial, which honors Colorado's veterans killed in the line of duty. My chorus, Sound of the Rockies, was invited to sing during the ceremony. All I had was my iPhone, but my placement on the risers next to the walkway put me in a position to get this shot of CFM President Rick Crandall and Medal of Honor recipient and W.W.II. veteran George T. Sakato, preparing to place flowers in front of the panels holding the names of all the Colorado troops who fell in W.W.II. Mr. Sakato is 92 years old.

It was an extraordinarily moving ceremony and a great honor to participate in a small way. And it was tough to sing under those conditions: emotions were running high, and I spent much of the afternoon near tears.

Nice moment in time Steve...
Any pics showing more of the monument? Looks very unique.

Still one of the coolest things you'll ever see fly! The Northrop N9M Flying Wing.

No Computers
No Fly By Wire
No Digits of Any Kind!

Which begs the question: How do you suppose you get checked out to fly it?

There is nothing quite like the feeling of your first flight in a single seat aircraft.....

Here's another iPhone capture of the memorial just after the ceremony ended and the families of the honored dead were invited to walk up to the wall.

The fun twist is that the gentleman flying it also ram-rodded the restoration so yeah, he better trust his own handiwork!

On a much less historic note: I rebuilt the panel, electrics and pneumatics on a Glasflugel Libelle a few years ago after it had sat unflown for 13 years after a major repair. During the first launch, all that went through my head was " oh Lord, please give me an accurate airspeed indication."......he did. I have to say that I really don't like being a test pilot.

I'm with you David. After six years of building my bipe, as the put up or shut up loomed, it was sobering. The flight was intense, but the elation following was indescribable.

Can't match the A2A magic you folks do here, but here's a couple ground level images of a vintage Starfighter parked at Easton airport in Maryland, using lens that are probably about the same age (Nikon 55 1.2S and 105 2.5P, both from about 1967).

Side view, 55 1.2S

Cockpit close up, 105 2.5P
