Awesome shot Glen..but I am reminded of the old aviation joke about "Doctors in V-tail Beeches"
being one of the most dangerous things in aviation...

The first one looks like a classic, but will definitely fly in one of those.

I was just thinking exactly the same thoughts Jim - When I burst rudely on the scene at around page 600, I was gobsmacked (English phrase) at the outstanding work here. I have learned much, Been inspired. and attempted to emulate the post processes. I know that my photography bar has risen no end since meeting you all.

A sincere thanks to all of you, especially Jim for starting this place

Jim and Donald,

Both of your comments are are spot on and amazingly prophetic...perhaps more that you realize.

FM and particularly the MATA thread is a very special place on the web. When I stumbled onto this little photographic paradise several years ago I was astounded by the quality of the work that was displayed. Since then the bar has been raised...significantly..on a regular basis! Driving it all was the incredible people that were <gasp> willing to share their knowledge and encouragement!

Personally, I cannot thank all of you enough. I accept the fact that I may never achieve the same level of skill as all of you but I am sure gonna try. Because of MATA I rarely travel without a camera, I am never shy about pulling it out to use it, and I cannot remember the last time I saw the "Professional" mode displayed in my viewfinder. Now I actually consider variables like the location of the sun, the type of aircraft, and were can I weasel myself into so that I can get that better shot. On my recent trip to New Mexico, I used techniques learned here and planned my trip to the VLA (time of day, location, etc.); I was rewarded with a 90% keeper rate. Will I ever enjoy a 90% keeper rate shooting aviation...not likely but applying what I have learned here has already cut down the use of my delete key. So, again, thank you everyone for setting the bar very high and encouraging all MATA visitors to meet the challenge.

I will now return to lurking in slack-jawed amazement...

I may need to ask Glenn, Jay, and Mikko to pump the brakes just a tad on their posts. I may have cut my eyes on the images from their last volley of posts

I've been chasing Speedbirds at KPHX recently. It seems that every time I find a some free time to catch the afternoon arrival, I also bring the overcast with me

Cool shot Zane, I like that you see a little piece of the P51C
Tell me how is the experience to fly in something like that Mustang.

I have been a fan of the P-51 for my whole life. My dad worked at North American during WWII and always talked about the Mustang with a mystical air to his voice. This flight was a true blessing from out of the blue. The idea was hatched a year ago.

The flight was amazing. The sound, smell and feel of the airplane is indeed special. The view in the Collings TP-51C rear seat is not all that good looking forward. But who cares! The airplane is smooth and docile feeling when you are just cursing along. But it shows it self to be a wild horse under power, during turns and rolls. I had the stick for over half of the flight..including one aileron roll. Flying along side the bombers just added to the special feel of the trip. My uncle flew B-24's so the added bonus of being in the P-51 along side the B-24 almost overwhelmed my emotions!

I was spent after the flight....driving home was not easy as the adrenaline wore off...lol
I owe many people for the making the opportunity happen. Jim, Whitney, Hunter, Matt, Ryan, Dawn, God...etc.

Wow...just wow.

Go ahead...try and wipe this smile off my face!

.. for those who have yet to try the LR 4 / CS6 32bit HDR - give it a go. I've found an HDR tone mapping that I can live with at long last.

Oh, and in the process of working through some old stuff with the new HDR process .. I found Lady Jo a new beer cellar.

Hey Thanks for that story much appreciated it's always cool to hear one's story's.
The smile says it all so you went full circle excellent, and the quality of your photo's is excellent.
Hoping for such an experience in the future but I have been blessed with some excellent flights with Jim and Gunny.....

Just an observation sticking your head out of the window with a pair of DC's on your head is not always the smartest thing to do
