I was just thinking exactly the same thoughts Jim - When I burst rudely on the scene at around page 600, I was gobsmacked (English phrase) at the outstanding work here. I have learned much, Been inspired. and attempted to emulate the post processes. I know that my photography bar has risen no end since meeting you all.
A sincere thanks to all of you, especially Jim for starting this place
Jim and Donald,
Both of your comments are are spot on and amazingly prophetic...perhaps more that you realize.
FM and particularly the MATA thread is a very special place on the web. When I stumbled onto this little photographic paradise several years ago I was astounded by the quality of the work that was displayed. Since then the bar has been raised...significantly..on a regular basis! Driving it all was the incredible people that were <gasp> willing to share their knowledge and encouragement!
Personally, I cannot thank all of you enough. I accept the fact that I may never achieve the same level of skill as all of you but I am sure gonna try. Because of MATA I rarely travel without a camera, I am never shy about pulling it out to use it, and I cannot remember the last time I saw the "Professional" mode displayed in my viewfinder. Now I actually consider variables like the location of the sun, the type of aircraft, and were can I weasel myself into so that I can get that better shot. On my recent trip to New Mexico, I used techniques learned here and planned my trip to the VLA (time of day, location, etc.); I was rewarded with a 90% keeper rate. Will I ever enjoy a 90% keeper rate shooting aviation...not likely but applying what I have learned here has already cut down the use of my delete key. So, again, thank you everyone for setting the bar very high and encouraging all MATA visitors to meet the challenge.
I will now return to lurking in slack-jawed amazement...
