p.1 #1 · Brazil photo trip - travel with gear? | |
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping to solicit some opinions re: travel to Brazil. My itinerary will include Iguazu Falls, The Pantanal, and possibly the Hyacinth preserve/cliffs. The flight into Brazil (Sau Paulo) should be easy with respect to camera gear (even a lot of camera gear). However, from Sao Paulo, flying to Iguazu or Iguazu to Campo Grande (Pantanal area) may be a challenge with more than a modest complement of photo gear. Specifically, I have seen most Brazilian weight restrictions for carry-on at 5 Kg!!! If I were to bring a Think Tank Airport International - the bag alone will comprise 50% of that weight! Not much left for camera gear. Are there some airlines in Brazil with more liberal weight restrictions with carry-on luggage? Is there another solution other than driving or taking only 2 lenses? Is it even worth it to bring a supertelephoto lens? I would like to, but it sounds difficult given the restrictions. I would prefer to not check any of this luggage unless it is handed back to me as I leave the plane. Does anyone have experience with travel to Brazil with lots of photo gear?
Here is what I plan to bring between myself and significant other:
2 camera bodies (40D and ?)
2 wide angles (10-22, 17-40)
1-2 zooms 24-105? and 70-200
1-2 tripods or monopods
Dilemma (supertelephotos - 300mm F/4L IS, 400mm F/5.6L, 100-400, or 500)
Iguazu will easily be covered without the need for a supertelephoto lens.
I worry I may kick myself if I do not bring longer lenses into the Pantanal for wildlife. I do not own the 400 or 100-400 but may consider renting or purchasing. I'd really love to bring the 500 but I worry it will be a travel and security concern.
Thoughts? Even without the longer lenses, I will be bringing 10 Kg of camera gear - how do I safely transport these lenses once inside Brazil?
