Great idea Steve, very fitting this MA.
I like the shot but I think it could have been better.
I find it a bit confused but I'm having a hard time saying why. Maybe the composition. It could have benefit from something "simpler".
A good shot nonetheless.

Hi Julien,
Thank you for your honest feedback. I appreciate very much how you give us your straight reaction. I agree a simpler composition would be better. I will go back and see if I can make a different crop.
Sometimes something as simple as a crop can greatly enhance a good photo. I love the composition. I had a similar idea but couldn't figure out how to position ice around fire. Did you create the icicle or did nature provide one for you?

Great Shot,

Hi Chad,
Thank you for the very kind words. I appreciate the encouragement. The icicle was provided by nature. It was hanging from our trellis out in the yard.

Great choice. I like to see the fire through the ice.
Focus is not perfect but it's a lot better to me !
Cheers,
Julien
Hi Julien,
Thanks again for the advice. I wish it was a tad sharper, but I don't really think it is the focus. I would have liked to sharpen it a bit more, but the crop is fairly extreme and sharpening would have resulted in a bit too much noise. I was left with this compromise between noise and sharpness, which all things being considered I was pretty happy with.
You're welcome Steve : I'm glad if I can be of any help :-)
By "focus is not perfect" I meant the now cropped version include a part of the ice cone that was not focused for (it's more to the end as we can see on the uncropped version) so sharpening would be of little use here.
I imagine a shot framed like the cropped one with this part tack sharp would have brought interesting details like orange captives air bubbles and flammes distortions (like you have) even more evident.
Congrats for making it to the finals too !
