That reminds me of my D60 days when it would provide nothing but soft images.... turned out the sensor was not positioned correctly. Canon ended up adjusting the shims and it was as sharp as a tack from then on.

Thats a perfectly in focus shot of the Chief Engineer who designed the MkIII

. He was a lot more handsome and human looking about 8 months back.

Careful, people will start swearing to the fact their seeing a religious figures in the images. The next thing you know it will be reported on the 11 o'clock news and crowds will begin flocking to the holy sites singing songs.

This discussion is starting to get really entertaining. I am sure 'longitudinal spherochromatic aberration' is going to be just as integrated in our vocabulary as 'BIFs' !

I received my 'fixed' mkIII today, and as I wrote in another thread the initial impression I got was that it is a huge improvement. Tried it briefly with the mkIIN this evening (poor light and cold...) and the mkIII was 100% (very) sharp under conditions the mkII really struggled. I will test more this weekend in bright light. I have never noticed the 'ghosting', but I have seen some very strange blur similar to this on my new 40D. Guess it must be LSA

Normcar: I shoot birds. Using a newly calibrated 600f4. I will test it more seriously over the weekend (in sunlight I hope), also using the 400f5,6. I also think shooting birds is a whole different thing than running athletes. I seldom exceed 1/4000 shutter (rarely 1/2500 I would say). No way I would use 1/8000 @f2.8 in any circumstance..

After two weeks of unending gray skies, I finally got some sun and a chance to check out my new BD Mark 3 (FW 1.1.3) on its intended subjects. Focus misses were very rare; this was more the norm (100% crop, processed through ACR and CS3; lens was 400/5.6)

I feel the same way as Yakim. With 2 1Dmklls, I've been anxiously awaiting the dust to settle on the mark 3 issue. But now I suppose I'm going to wait some more. I really wanted the mark 3 for football, now I'd like it for basketball, but it's just not going to happen until I have confidence it's going to have better AF than my mk 2.

Oh well.....

What gets me really irritated is the fact that I was ready to upgrade from my 1Ds2 to the 1Ds3 and all this has put me on hold. I am really dissapointed in Canon for the way they have dealt with the issue. Getty has every right to demand their bodies replaced. Whereas I think a full refund to everyone would be more appropriate. It is just beyond me how they can sell goods that are flawed from the box and do not have to offer a refund. There should be a law for this. At least here in Estonia there is a consumer protection law which states that if something is not as it should in something You bought You are entitled to a fix, then a replacement and then a full refund.

In this situation the end result here would be a refund, because neither a fix nor a replacement can cure the problem. I make a living from photography and I cannot allow my time or money being caught up in situations like this. When I buy a 5000-8000 item I expect it to work straight out of the box with no questions asked.

Now, if that nikon D3 had 21 MP, it would be good bye to Canon.
Besides there have always been issues with Canon when new bodies came out. 1DM2 was soft, so they made a M2N. The Ds models have always been top notch, but this uncertainty that they have created will put the ones looking to buy new gear on hold until someone does the testing. That's outrageous.

Canon should be grateful it has such customers like Rob and Jeff etc, who are willing to take the time and analyze the photos. This should not be the case.
But thank You guys for an insightful thread.

The 1D2 was soft because of the AA filter. It sharpened very well in post. There was no ghosting or AF problems on the magnitude of the 1D3. Yes there were a few issues with lowlight focus that required firmware up to 1.10 before it was fixed. But the AI Servo shot true for most sport shooters. It still performed as well or better than the 1D. The 1D2N also performed allaround slightly better than the 1D2.
Without proof that Canon intentionally released a bad product, I'd say something got pass the QC. It's obviously it's not every camera body because some people are very happy with their 1D3. I unfortunately was not one of them.
What makes you think the Nikon D3 will outperform the 1D3 in similar circumstances? I have the D2X and 1D2N and I prefer the 1D2N for wildlife shooting, better AF=more keepers. Plus the Canon full weather sealing for body AND lens is something I will always pay more for as cheap insurance.
Going back on topic, I've seen this 'ghosting' as well in the 2 1D3 I temporarily owned. The 2nd one , blue dot with 1.1.3 was better than the first one I had. But still inferior to the performance of the 1D2N, as per RG's tests.

I haven't checked any of my images yet but will have a look when I get home.

Presumably if the issue is as a result of the sensor cleaning function it should be present on the 400D, 40D and 1D MK III?

I have the 40D and had the 400D.

I have close to 5K on the 40D and I am guessing I had around 3K shots on the 400D. No issues ever noted.

Yes I had that on a 400D I used for several weeks.

has anyone tried to initiate a credit card (visa, mastercard, etc) charge dispute? any success? my credit card policy gives me 120-days to dispute something like this and i'm very tempted to do it. it's worth a shot, non?

EDIT: vendor wants nothing to do with me (i've exceeded the 14-day return/ exchange policy)
