p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Men's hockey: BU vs US under 18

On Saturday night, I shot the BU men’s hockey team as they took on the US national under-18 team at Agganis Arena. I shot the first two periods from the stands, and the last from the mid-ice photo box.

All made with a 1D and 300 f/2.8L non-IS in JPEG, leveled/curved in PS, resized using PShizzy’s actions. No noise reduction.

Constructive criticism always appreciated.

Action and hits:
1.) 1/640, f/2.8, ISO 1250

2.) 1/640, f/2.8, ISO 1250

3.) 1/800, f/2.8, ISO 1600

4.) 1/640, f/2.8, ISO 1250

5.) 1/640, f/2.8, ISO 1250

6.) 1/800, f/2.8, ISO 1600

And some single player shots:
7.) 1/800, f/2.8, ISO 1600

8.) 1/800, f/2.8, ISO 1600

9.) 1/800, f/2.8, ISO 1600

Thanks for looking,

Great shots! #6 reminds me of going to the old Garden for Boston Braves games as a kid and being able to sit down close to the boards.

o man....looks like the u.s. was playing a physical hockey game.
I like all of these.
pic #3- #27 just avoided that check. Nice timing on the shot.
Pic #6- way to capture the great facial expressions from the young fans of the coolest game on earth.

Thanks for the comments!

Hockey Man- The US under 18s were very physical, especially for being much smaller than the ~22 year olds on the BU team. They came very close to tying the game up at 3-3 with a few seconds in the third, but the BU goalie robbed the shot. Whew.

Its always interesting when two different "levels" are paired up against each other.
Im sure you had a great time shooting the game.

Great series. My favorite is #6 just for the kids' reaction. That's awesome.

Some things I noticed:

(1) Seems like you have some different angles going on... some low at ice level (eg #3) and some up higher (eg #2). Did you move around a bit for these?

(2) The lack of noise reduction is evident, but I think it's a good thing. Too many times we're so worried about squeeky clean shots that we effectively kill detail to achieve it. These have very good detail, and the noise is certainly not offensive. Nicely done...

(3) For having shot jpg, you've done a great job getting the WB right in-cam.

(4) Technically they're excellent. Great action, good composition, action stopped sharp and crisp, colors are good, and horizons are straight. Nice.

Nice job. Arena lighting there looks very good based on your ISO's and shutter speeds. Kudos on this set.

Thanks DJ-

I try to do as many different angles as I reasonably can, I don't want them to get stale. With good access, it's a ton of fun to figure out where the next best spot will be.

I try to show people what the 1D can do without noise reduction, and I like that the CCD keeps detail as the ISO climbs up. These are pictures, not paintings after all.

Thank you for the WB praise- it's always a crap shoot with the 1D, as the LCD is about as inaccurate as it gets. I trust the ice surface for a good white reference, and it's worked so far.

The arena is phenomenally lit- it's one of the best college rinks around, I hear. Being able to stop the action below ISO 3200 is a pleasure.

I want to move beyond being just technically good, and I think changing the angles up is a good start. Thanks again!

b-man,

Nice shots. You captured some nice action. It is fun to be able to compare your pictures with mine, given they were taken at the same event. Mine were taken through the glass which accounts for the more vibrant colors in yours. I think I am also doing too much noise reduction. I look forward to shooting there again soon, only this time I think I will take the 300mm and shoot over the glass. Look forward to seeing more. --Dave

B-man thought I saw you there but wasn't sure. I was with my son and his friend (2 9 year olds), we were sitting just above the garage for the zamboni, next to the student section (needless to say I need to clean up my son's vocabulary). Where you carrying around a 70-200 on either a 20D/battery grip or a 1 Series body? It was a pretty good game considering the kids on the BU team are at least 2 years older, significantly bigger, oh and there backup goallie is pretty dam good. As for photo comments it appears a little more noise than I typically like but great composition (which sells).

Thanks Gerry! I tend to keep the grain/noise in there, as these are for newsprint and smaller usage online.

I was the one with the 1-series; my editor had the 20D/grip combo. I had either the 70-200 or 300 2.8, hard to miss.

would it be fast enough to shoot at 1/500th and ISO 1000? I do like the shots a lot... good timing & technique. I also wish the noise was a little lower

With the 1D, there's no way I could do it; the CCD isn't like the CMOS in all of Canon's other DSLRs in that it keeps a ton of highlight information, but it doesn't retain much shadow detail. Also, 1/500 isn't as fast as one might think; I'm sure some of my shots would have been lost to motion blur if I'd shot slower at lower ISOs.

I could have Neat-Imaged, but I like keeping all of the detail. The 1D makes film-like images, and I like keeping it that way.

B-man, first, I love your images. Great job. I especially find a little humor in #3 where the girl is pointing and praying she will get a good show through the peep hole!

I will have to settle for a difference of opinion when shooting below 1/500 and retaining detail with the 1D. I shoot in poorly lit arenas all the time and frequently have to drop to 1/500 or 1/400 for that matter and manage to keep decent shadow detail. Also, unless you are trying to stop a slapshot, 1/400 is manageable. I would call it the bottom edge of acceptable. I understand that you shoot for newsprint, however, I shoot for color 8x10s and I can't shoot above ISO 1000 in my 1D. I have had to shoot at 1250 before, but I didn't care to much for the results.

Here is an example of ISO1000, 1/400. I had to make this fairly small to save bandwidth, but when zoomed in, there is plenty of detail left in the shadow areas.

Great series, Brooks! I also really like #3 for the kids expressions, but the hockey action is nothing to scoff at. 1/640! Wow, nice to be able to shoot so fast! I also like the varied angles that you have for your shots. I really should try and move around a bit and this is a fine example of why. Great job!

Thomas Miller-
Sorry for preaching to the choir, I didn't realize you shot a 1D as well! I prefer to shoot faster SS and higher ISOs because 300dpi print quality isn't very important to me.

The 1D has shadow detail, but not as much as, say, a 20D or 1DMKII. The detail it does have, as I imagine you know, shows up as pretty nasty grain when brought out in post-production.

RMcD- thanks for the comments!
