p.1 #1 · New 40D buyer with insurance question

I have held off long enough. I will buy a Canon 40D, probably at BestBuy, when I visit New Orleans over the coming holidays. I am not a big believer in insurance, but I am considering getting their 3-yr extra warranty. (about $160). I would appreciate your comments/feedback on that. Also, are there any camera serial numbers that I should be leery of? Thanks, HG.

First, a warranty is not insurance.

If you're in France, why would you buy an extended warranty in the US? Would you then ship the camera overseas for service?

Let's not quibble. Do you think it is worth it? Things like this are a sort of betting. I thought that you might have more experience than I with BB.
And for the foreseeable future, I am stationed in the US. Thanks. HG

Save your money from BestBuy, get it online at amazon.com or bhphoto.com. Best Buy is a joke, save the $160 for a bag or memory. I wouldn't worry about service warranty, you get one year. I've never purchased one for slr or dlsr.

You weren't very clear about being stationed in the US...your profile says France and you mentioned you would "visit New Orleans over the coming holidays" which leads one to believe you're not here already and plan to return afterward. Moving right along...

I've never bought a camera from BestBuy...their prices are much too high. Buying on-line from B&H, Adorama, etc. (reputable dealers) will save you a bunch of money...enough to pay for the warranty if you want it.

The extended warranty is your choice...I don't bother with them. Some of them are a huge hassle (not specifically the ones from BestBuy) and it's easier to simply deal with Canon...their repair rates are pretty reasonable.

If the warranty from BestBuy offers replacement for drops, water, etc. then that's a consideration IF you trust that they will follow through on replacement from those hazards. Perhaps this is why you referred to it as insurance? The standard Canon warranty won't cover this kind of damage.

Many credit cards will double the manufacturer's warranty, which is a no-cost way to extend the warranty period to 2 years.

Thanks, guys, for the helpful responses.
I was attracted to the 10-12% off coupon that BB sent out and discouraged by Amazon's claim that shipment would be in 3-5 weeks. I have ordered from Adorama before and was happy but they weren't cheaper than BB. There's also the feeling that I do like to give Circuit City and BestBuy *some* business since we all do "use" them to check out cameras, tvs, etc.
Thanks Dcains, my credit card company does give extended warranty, so I will skip the warranty offer.HG
