p.1 #1 · What Kirk QR Support for L Bracket?

So, I've searched here and on Kirk's website and don't have the definitive
answer.

I'm interested in getting a Kirk L bracket for my 30D (without grip), since I've
found one for a very good price. This will require changing the quick release
clamp on my Manfrotto 488RC2 ballhead from a Manfrotto RC2 clamp to an
Arca-style clamp. Which Kirk clamp should I get? Will all of their clamps
fit a 30D L bracket? I also will use an LP-5 to support my 400/5.6L with
tripod ring.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Either their QRC - 1.75 or QRC- 2 will work well. I adapted my 488RCO with the QRC-2 and it works really well. They support my L-bracket well. This should support your setup well. Some may argue you should get a Really Right Stuff lever clamp, but I am an odd ball who prefers the screw type clamps. I hope this helps.

Thanks Steve.

RRS actually discourages one from trying to mate a Kirk plate
to an RRS lever clamp. I've never tried it, but they suggest
either using a screw clamp or changing to an RRS or Wimberley
plate.

One of the attractions to going Kirk as opposed to RRS is price.
Someone has an L bracket for $55 in good shape, and I can get
the Kirk clamp for $60. Cheap enough to make the plunge.

I was hoping the QRC-2 would do it. Thanks again,
Tim

One can only imagine why RRS would discourage against using a competitors product . I have called Kirk on this very issue since I had a Kirk L and a lever clamp coming. They assured me that there would be NO problem. Call for yourself and share your concerns if you are still uneasy about it.

Go read the RRS site. They are very specific; some differences in sizing & tolerances have apparently caused issues with Kirk plates in RRS lever clamps. They also specifically say that Wimberley (another competitor) plates work fine, and all work fine in their screw clamps.

I am not disputing what its says on their site, I am only saying that when I talked to a gentleman at Kirk, he said that there was one or two particular plate models for an old Nikon camera years ago that didn't fit well. I don't really care to much since all of my stuff works great.... Happy Holidays

I've had 3 different Kirk L-Brackets, and 4 of their lens plates, all work perfectly with 2 different RRS lever clamps.

But, to answer the OP's question, the 2" Kirk clamp will be fine. I've got two, which I use on monopods.

Is it easy to remove the RC2 plate from the Manfrotto 488 ball head?
It's not clear to me how I'd do it. It looks like it's wrenched into place
very firmly. Is there a way to do it without gouging up the ball?

Thanks,
Tim
