I am considering purchasing an Epson Photoviewer (P-3000) and have a question. I believe that you can connect this device directly to an external harddrive and transfer images from the Epson to the external HD for backup. (Without a computer.) Is this correct?
I don't know. I just plugged an external USB drive into the larger USB port on my p-5000 (twin of the p-3000) and got nothing. Either it needs to be plugged into the smaller USB port or else I need an external power supply for the portable HDD. It obviously got no power from my p-5000.
I do not have my p-5000 manual handy.
[update] applying power to the external drive did not help. However, I see that another factor is that the p-5000 wants to see a FAT32 formatted drive - not an NTFS formatted drive like I was using. I still don't know whether I used the right port or not, but I think I did.
There is a section here that tells you how to transfer files from the viewer to an external HD, so it looks like you can do this. This might be a good option for traveling when I don't want to bring my laptop.

Thanks!

Yes you can and I have done it. However, the P-3000 will not power the external drive through its USB port and the drive must be formatted FAT32. I've done is successfully with LaCie All Terrain drive. LaCie drives give you a cable that is a USB to power plug cable so you can connect it up to one of the usb wall charger or car adaptor and power it (but it is a little finicky with them so test first). Then, even though you are using the USB port on the drive to connect to the Epson there is no conflict.
