p.1 #1 · Adobe Illustrator CS3 Books recommendations

Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone can make any suggestions to a good introductory book on using Adobe Illustrator. I guess I am looking for something similar to what Scott Kelby has done with photoshop. The book on illustrator doesnt have to relate to photography at all.

I had a look on amazon but dont know which one to go for. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

thanks
veeral

I can't vouch for it because I just got it, but the "Illustrator CS3 Wow!" book is the only one that looked interesting to me.

I would choose carefully and avoid 90% of the books out there. They are simply regurgitated manuals, with absolutely no information that isn't already available to you.

I'd also consider using Lynda.com for training. You can join for as little as $25/month and you will learn far more than you can from buying a book. I used to have shelves full of "how to" books, but I've sold 90% of them and won't be buying more. the beauty of Lynda is that you aren't restricted to one "book" or even one application. it's all there on an "all you can eat' basis.

I have no association with them at all, but I am a satisfied customer. If you want to look around, look at the stuff by Deke McClelland.

the Wow books assume you know the basics already. if you don't, they are pretty hard to follow at times. i've owned all the Photoshop ones from Wow 3 onwards. the CS3 one is the only one i am missing.

You're right Herb, and I think that's the reason that I was interested.

I received a set of CS3 Design Premium manuals along with my order, and I also subscribe to Lynda. I have no desire/need for the basic manuals that repeat the same stuff in the help file and I was looking for something interesting and beyond the basics...

The Adobe "Classroom in a Book" for Illustrator gives a good basic introduction to the program.

The Peach Pit Press books for the entire Adobe line are among the best and most complete. Check them out.

check out designerstalk.com there was just a similar question, and the forum is really helpful for learning about design.
