p.2 #1 · Best backpack for hiking with...

After trying several backpacks , I settled on on the Kata r-103.
This thing is a tank(its made of ballistic grade nylon), feels great, and holds an arsenal. I carry a 20d, canon 100-400 L, Canon 24-105 L, Tokina 12-24, Tokina 100 macro, Sigma flash , Bogen 3001 bp pro tripod(on sheath on the outside),filters and cleaning gear, and still usually have room for snacks.
I also throw a Camelbak water bladder in the laptop pouch and I'm set for the day. I usually hike with this setup nearly all day, and the pack still feels very comfortable and balanced to me, which is very important to me because my knees are very weak after having several operations. Give the R-103 a try.

Timm,
What do you do for hydration on warm days? I'm considering configuring it to take a 45 oz reservoir or some such. I have a pack (Deuter Race X Air I) that I've been using for events on hot days because it takes a 100oz reservoir and has a full mesh back so I stay cool. I did an event this past summer where I emptied the entire reservoir plus about 1/3 of a refill, so hydration is important. If I can't rig it with a hydration bladder, I was going to get a few 1L collapsible bladder-type bottles so I can stash them when empty.

Well, mostly beer.

Honestly, there are limits to how much you're going to carry in this rig. There are two side pockets that will each hold a 1 liter water bottles--if you don't have your flash units in the pockets. I have a couple of water bottle carriers that slip onto the waistbelt to carry more 1 liter bottles. Also handy for quick-access lens carry. I once rigged a Camelback hydopouch carrier onto the shoulder straps and used it to carry a 300f4 on a long hike, which worked fine and would likely work just as well with the hydropouch in it. I've just never gotten into the habit of sucking on a tube.
