p.1 #1 · #272 Edge of Night

Many good pool players spent countless hours of the night using the edge of a billiard ball as an aiming point.

C&C's please....

Hi Bob,

I like the idea and the shot very much, but I am not fond of the reflection that cuts across the eight or the red (which looks to me like CA) streak on the top. If you could fix these in post-processing of by reshooting I think it would be a great image. I don't mean to be critical I see this as a great shot with just a couple of minor flaws that should be easy to fix. I hope this helps,

Steve S.

Thanks. I like the out-of-focus area effect in this image. A cue stick, piece of chalk and the bed of a billiard table are all essential elements of a game.

Hi Steve,
The original image had more light spots dust and imperfections on ball. I put this up hoping to get some feedback before doing another take. Thanks for your feedback.

What is CA? I think the red is a reflection of the red paper from the piece of chalk in the background. Maybe I had too much lighting?

Don't worry about being too critical. My focus and interests are more on learning.
Thanks again,
Bob

Hi Bob,

CA is short for chromatic aberation and it often occurs on the edges of brightly lit areas in a shot and is often worse in the corners and when a lens is at or near its widest aperture. Tree branches with with bright light behind them often show this artifact. It can be bluish purple, red, yellow, or green. When I look at your shot again, I think it is a reflection from the chalk not CA, but it has the same appearance to some extent--a color shft on an edge of a brightly lit object. If it were CA most post-processing programs including Adobe Camera Raw have settings that can do a lot to get rid of it. If you shoot again, if it is a reflection you can probably get rid of it by just moving the chalk about an inch back. I hope this helps,

Steve S.

The original - 8 ball - is better in my opinion.
I, too, wish the reflection was not cutting across the number 8... But I actually like the red reflection on the edge of the 8-ball. Good DOF, too. Nice entry!

Hi Bob! I didn't see the previous images, but I love this one! I even like the sliver of red along the top of the 8 ball. The concept is original, and clever, and the DOF works beautifully. (I love Pool. We had a table in our house when I was growing up, so your photo made me wish for those old days.)

Great job!!

Thanks Philly,
I love pool also. I spend a great deal of my time playing pool. Its really nice when I get a chance to do both pool and photography. I'm hoping to create some nice images (with the help of comments from this forum), so that I can give some away in nice picture frames to my pool playing friends!

Thanks Frank. Although the focus is on the edge of the ball for this WA, I'm thinking about doing another shot with the focus on the 8 instead. If it comes out nice, I can make a poster for my pool playing friend as a Xmas gift!

Thanks! There's a really good old-time player/cuemaker out of Racine, Wisconsin named Sailor. If you ever want lessons, he's one of the best!
Thanks!
