p.1 #1 · Sea Otters at Elkhorn Slough

Well, I finally managed to whittle down my collection of sea otter images from the recent outing to Elkhorn Slough. I am pretty pleased with the number of good shots that I got. I figured I would do the Sea Otters first, and next Pelicans (maybe tomorrow?) and finally the rest of everything. I quickly picked out 10 of the Sea Otter images that I think are "keepers", so I'll post those here.

All images here were taken handheld with my 20D. All but one were using the 500mm f/4L IS. The other image was with the 400mm f/5.6L. As usual, all EXIF data should be intact.

C&C encouraged and welcomed.

What an entertaining series with some great, crisp shots, Ed. Amazing color and detail through out, a pleasure to view. I like them all, but #7 has a special feel.
I just sent my 20 D in for repair. I did somthing stupid and I missed up the display. As soon as it gets back I'll put it back to work.
Thanks for sharing,
Socrate

Hi Ed,

These are outstanding. Great job hand-holding the 500!!! I got a real kick (lol) when I saw #5 and your title. They are all so sharp and yet have a sense of action. #7 and 9 would also be among my very favorites. Nice, nice job on these!! Looking forward to the rest.

Thanks Bert. It's been a good combination for me - but I'm really looking for to the Mk III. The better AF system is what I'm after there - plus the high ISO performance won't hurt either

Thanks Socrate. Yeah, the mother and pup (cub? whelp?) were really cool to see in person. The photos don't do them justice - at least mine don't

Good luck with the 20D. I know how I get when I don't have a camera around!

I appreciate the kind words Cris. The otters are so anthropomorphic - it's not hard to make up the captions.

Thanks Steve. That guy's hand expression really reminds me of Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. I probably should used the caption "Eeeeexcellent!", except I'm not sure if everyone would have gotten it.

Hey John! Thanks. From what the boat captain told us, they whelp their young pretty much all year round. It was news to me too.
