p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Photography Education suggestions....

I live in NJ and am graduating with my BA (not in photography) in December. I am interested in taking classes in photography, maybe one or two in the spring semester. I can easily hop on a train 2 or 3 times a week into the city. I woul dlike to learn and refine basic photography skills reguarding digital work. I have taken photography 1 and 2 in college, but am interested in some serious learning. Anyone have any suggestions as to what/where I should look into in NJ or NYC....

Thanks for any help. BTW I have done a google search and all that but just a feel a bit lost....

I don't live anywhere near you, so I can't recommend, but it brings joy to my heart to see any FM'ers looking to really learn the photographic crafts rather than just buying a digicam and saying 'I'm a photographer'.

Find a top professional in your area of interest and assist for him/her. You will learn as much as you would in most photo classes. I am a Brooks Institute graduate and am commenting on first hand experience. If you could go to a school like Brooks, you would benefit greatly but most photography classes are no where near as focused as Brooks or Art Center curriculum.

Thanks for the encouragement Jeffrey.

Staples, So, you think rather then go to school 2-3 days, geta job assisting 2-3 days? I know you're a graduate and all but shouldn't I start with a base of education?? I don't want a career in photography other then selling the odd editotial shot here and there....

You will learn faster on the job than in a classroom - that was my only point.

NYIP (New York Institute of Photography) has been around since Noah and flood (well, just short of a hundred years). I cannot comment on their quality of instruction but to have lasted that long they must be doing something right.

Don't forget the Philly area, depending on where you live in NJ

If you find the right person. Next would be finding someone patient to teach you Lightroom - well.
