p.1 #1 · Pelicans - Flight 264 over SJWS

We got the chance to shoot today at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, California. We expected it to be an uneventful day due to the recent fires here in Southern California. We saw the usual stilts, avocets and ducks in the ponds.

Then a flock of maybe 100 or so white pelicans came flying by. We took a few shots as they circle around the ponds. To our surprise we noticed one had a red tag on the right shoulder.

Here is one shot with the tag visible:

As it flew by, the identifying number was visible:

Here are a couple of the un-tagged ones:

We will ask our local wildlife authorities for proper identification but can anybody identify the tags?

As always, your C&C are appreciated.

Thanks

dan

Good old Google had a potential answer: "Lake Walcott colony [white pelicans] will get red tags. The tags will have white unique three digit codes, and all tags are on the right wing near the “elbow.” " (Lake Walcott, easterm Idaho.) http://emmettidaho.com/contentDetail.aspx?region=6&ContentID=309377

jdc562,

That was a valuable link you have provided!

We have e-mailed them based on the link in the article and the Regional Biologist from Idaho Fish and Game have responded with a bit more information.

Thank you for the quick response

I can help with the ID'ing the tags, Dan. It is a red tag and numbered 264. According to my records, his name is Bob.

Seriously though, his name is really Fred.

Nice shots!

Very nice set, Dan. Good job with the exposure. I like the color in the first shot, but is the third my favorite. Thanks for sharing,

Thanks Chris

Maybe I should get some Pick 3 lottery tickets with those numbers

I have to be on the lookout next time. Since they are from Idaho, they might be carrying potatos to drop on us poor birders.

Hope to shoot with you by SD River soon.

Cheers,

dan

Thanks, Thang

You are right, those tags are quite humongous. As you will soon find out when reading nursery rhymes to your kid: The better to see them

Glad to be able to document this and provide important data to the researchers.

See you around.

Fine stuff, Dan, I enjoyed the first one especially, the red tag actually being almost attractive to the shot, bringing out the contrasting cool background colors more

Nathan,

It was interesting to know that the bird came all the way from your backyard to feed here during winter

To all our friends:

Please be on the lookout for the tagged pelicans. The researchers in Idaho (Department of Fish and Games) are very appreciative of the information we have provided so far, and will appreciate any more sighting reports.

I have been informed that at least 3 more red-tagged and one black-tagged pelicans have been seen locally. I am seeking permission to post links to the pictures.

Thanks

dan
