p.1 #1 · 40D problems / err99 display

I hook the new 40D up to my Alien Bees through the sync cord, go to take a shot and instead of seeing the image I see err99 on the display, could not process picture or something, turn off camera or remove battery. It took the shot but would not write it to flash. I mean the shutter opened and shut normal.

I turn off and back on and it works fine.

Later, after the camera goes to sleep, I pick it up, take a shot and same thing. This was with two different lenses one tethered to the strobes, the other not. It happened a third time as well.

Anyone ever get this? I don't have confidence in this camera now.

I haven't tried using my 40D with strobes, but I did notice in the manual that it appeared to have a max sync speed of 1/60th second. It does sound like a problem with the camera. You might want to follow the MIII Err 99 thread ... sounds similar.

Do you have Live View enabled with silent shoot? The flash won't fire in mode 1 and 2. You need to set the menu to disable.

p.1 #4 · 40D problems / err99 display

I got this error 3 times shooting a wedding Saturday.

I have had my 40D for 15 days. I shot one wedding with it and no trouble at all. probably about 1000 actuation's. I had another outing with this camera for another 200 actuation's. Several different lenses ranging from Canon L, Canon non-L, and Sigma EX. I got through the entire pre-ceremony, ceremony and formals and was well into the reception. About another 500 actuation's. This was my third CF card at this wedding, went through about 7 different CF cards at the last wedding. I used three different batteries since new as I rotate the batteries when I re-charge for events. The batteries range from date code 4XBG to 75CG. I was using battery date code 73CG in the 40D when experiencing problems.

The first instance occurred with a 24-70L, less than a year old, using the sync cable to studio strobes. I immediately switched bodies and used the 30D with 24-70L and strobes with no issue at all. The issue seemed to occur once the camera had gone into sleep mode and it was always the first picture after coming back on from sleep when it occurred.

The second instance occurred with a 70-200 2.8L is, less than a year old. This time is was again after the camera had gone to sleep and came back on.

The third instance was with a 135L, less than a year old. Once again, after sleep mode.

I have sleep mode set to 8 minutes. Every time, I would turn the camera off and on and it would be fine. I pulled the battery out and reseated as well.

It is not logical to blame this on a battery contact or even on a lens contact issue. The camera focuses, displays everything properly and takes the picture (as in the shutter actuates). It is when the camera is trying to write to the CF card this error comes up on the main display. The picture is never written to flash.

I only use SanDisk Extreme III cards and have NEVER had a single issue with any SanDisk card.

I contacted the store where I bought it and the guy had just gotten off the phone with another customer having the same issue. He instructed me to bring the camera in for exchange.

I hope this level of detail helps. It really seems like a firmware bug to me.
