p.1 #1 · Mamiya RB 67 ProS vs. Hasselblad 500CM

Hi!

I need your opinion guys!
Between a Mamyia RB 67 ProS (in mint condition, it's really new!) and a Hasselblad 500CM (in EXC condition) what did you chose? Both cameras are in perfect working condition.
Mamiya have two backs (one 6x7cm and one 6x4.5mm), 90mm Sekor C lens and Hasselblad have one back and 80mm Plannar lens.

I already have the above Mamiya (quite happy with it!) and I'm wondering if it's a "healthy" thing to change it with the Hassy.

Thank you for your furher opinions!

Are you ever going to get a digital back? The Hassy would be better in that case. But for film, the RB. Unless you do a lot of field work, then the Hassy. Unless your field work isn't hiking with the thing on your back, then the RB. And since you already have the RB, unless there's something specific it doesn't do for you, then just keep it. It's a tank, you'll have it for the rest of your life, or another few years until they stop making film.

If you shoot square and only square then go for the hassy, if you're shooting for a rectangular crop then you might as well get a 645 which is what the 6X6 becomes anyway when you crop it, plenty out there.

Despite of it's weight I'm very comfortable with the RB. Tough build, it looks to last forever and most of all, on the net can be found a lot lens or other accessories at a decent price. As an example, my second RB back it's a 6x4.5mm back that allow me to shoot in 2/3 composition manner.
But nevertheless a Hassy it's a Hassy! It's like a mirage for me

My photos will rest in my gallery site - http://www.ioannicolae.ro - I print my work, no matter if it's a digital or classic, only for selling that is why I have no problem with archival albums.

Even if it's a studio camera, I use it especially for portraits and landscape photos. Over two thirds of my Mamiya photos was made outdoor or in location. The rest of them are in studio. If I will have a Hassy I'll do the same photos in the same way. It will be a challenge for me to transpose my photographic vision in a square format. Quite a challenge!

If you want the 6X7 for outdoor work then you have a choice between the excellent pentax and mamiya rangefinder offerings. Far smaller footprint and easy to use.

With your last post, I'd definitely say stick with the Mamiya. Sounds like you're looking at the Hassy mainly because of the nameplate on the front--not a good enough reason IMHO.

I have a Hassy 500cm but would recommend you opt for the 6X7 Mamiya. Lens's are a bit cheaper and the quality is fabulous. Hassy is outstanding too but overall the Mamiya would be a better purchase - while there is still film of course (as previously stated)!
I like the way the RB focus's with the two step thing, coarse and fine focus. Certainly not speedy but quality is what you are aiming at not speed anyway.

My opinion.

I will never understand why so many people love the L7? Least the RZ has a a full frame when you want to have any thing but 6x6...even More active area

The main point of the RB67 Pro SD revision (the latest version) was to be fully compatible with digital backs. Hassy might have a slightly better selection of backs, but the RB7 Pro SD is fully compatible with many backs. The ZD digital back, as well as the Hassleblad/Imacon CF and CF-MS backs are compatible with the RB67.

Yup, I know that... What I do not know it's about the difference between the ProS and ProSD backs. As far as I know are 100% compatible without any difference between them.
At this moment, I don't want to move to a digital back because of two reasons:
1 - on film I have a better dynamic range and a far better resolution;
2 - a digital back it's to expensive
I'm not the "old and conservator type" photographer but I remark that when I work on film I have a much better satisfaction.
