Why are there so many of these lenses for sale in the for sale forum? I see like 5:1 compared to the 24-70 f/2.8L. Are people buying 5D kits and getting rid of them? Just curious.
I don't know the answer of your question. I would say just coincidence and I really do not think people that put them for sale know more than the rest of us.
I bought a used one 3 days ago from a local FM member, there were 7 for sell on B&S and 4 within a hour on San Diego craigslist. I want one because I don't have a zoom, not because I need one.
I think that the 24-105 is very easy to sell. When the double/triple rebates were offered, I bought one just because I knew it would sell quickly - it was my 2nd to get a larger discount on the 5D.
There are a lot for sale because people get them in the 5D kit and get a great discount on the lens ad then sell it to recoup some of the cost of the body. Same thing for the 'kit' lens with the 30D and 40D - the 28-135IS.

I think this is the main reason also. I already had a 24-105mm but when ordering the 5D the kit price with the 24-105 was just too much to pass up. I will be selling my 2nd one also.
I think this is going to happen with the 40D and 28-135 as well and you will probably see a lot of 28-135 lens for sale in the next month or so.
I'm voting with the "KIT" option. I bet you will see a ton of 28-135 IS up for sale in a few months. At added cost form the 40D (body only) is only $200, it is a steal. You can turn around and sell it for at least $300.

I would not count on that price, there will be a lot for sale and it is not as desirable as the 24-105
There is a 28-135 kit lens for sale right now for $230.
I own 24-105 and it is amazing lens, and in short time, when I will buy 5D I will get it with 24-105 and one will sell, with proppably little profit this can by one of reasons for example ...
I think there are many good reasons for that: (1) the 24-105 has been part of more discount programs than 24-70 (iirc); (2) the 24-105 was bundled as a kit lens for the 5D (these two reasons explain why the number of new copies sold is most likely higher for the 24-105); (3) since the 24-105 is lighter, has more range, and has IS, so I am sure many people like it more as a travel lens (which you may purchase for a trip and sell afterwards).
Well, I sold my 24-105 (last year) and returned to the 24-70 mainly because the 24-105 at 24mm distorts considerably more than the 24-70 at 24, and also because of the superior bokeh of the 24-70 at f2.8.

Droves of people have simultaneously become tired of the vignetting at 24mm and their eyes have been open to the superior boke of the 24-70mm. j/k

yup...and what a great lense it is...It's my go to lense for many situations..I paid full pop on mine..
I bought my 24-105 and loved it. For some reason, I let myself get talked into trading for the 24-70 - mostly for the bokeh. After, like most things, I realized how much more I like IS than the one extra stop of the 24-70. I don't see the distortion some mention at 24mm on my 24-105.
I really want a 24-105 back again - but I don't want to buy another. I might put my 24-70 up for trade. Ug, decisions, decisions. In any event, it's a GREAT lens.
