Thanks for the link clotug. Halfway down the page it discusses the interchangeable focusing screens. Here's a quote:
"Focusing Screens. Finally, Canon has added the ability to change the 40D's focusing screen. Two optional "Ef" focusing screens are available in addition to the standard screen (which is called "Ef-A"). The Ef-D screen is a precision matte design with a grid overlay, for verifying horizon lines and perspective. The Ef-S screen has a Super Precision matte design that should allow for finer focusing with fast lenses (those with maximum apertures under f/2.8). These are priced at $45 each."
I have two questions. One is whether or not the focusing screens are included in the box. I thought I recalled seeing somewhere that it is, but I may be wrong. Secondly, is the Ef-S an upgraded screen to the standard one? Are there any advantages of using the Ef-A screen instead of the optional Ef-S?
Stunnaz, I doubt that the optional focus screens will be included. They aren't on the 1-series nor on the 5D. But they aren't expensive, and they're easy to change with the tool that is included with each screen.
Ohhh I can't wait to get my anxious little hands on that! Thanx Max for the shutter mp4 sound! [I bought my car last time because I heard a sound video of it! lolol] Seriously!
It does sound like the MKIII. I've been with a friend a few times and noticed how nice it was compared to the 20D. My 20D scares away birds @ 50ft.!!
Should have mine in a few days. I hope. It's hard to say, as there is so much rumors going on for local stores. I'm surprised there isn't much more posts other than Dpreview jammed with the 40D stuff.
Yes, supposed to be larger viewfinder as well as LCD.
Hi Stunnaz, regarding the focus screens:
- only the standard Ef-A is included in the box
- the Ef-D has a grid for easy alignment
- the Ef-S makes manual focussing easier
The manual also notes:
- the Ef-S is optimised for f2.8 or faster lenses
- if slower lenses are used, the viewfinder will look darker than with the Ef-A
tanks for your reply, but the 'pixel dimension' I am interested in is the figure that is shown in the 'Image Size dialogue box in Photoshop. This figure changes if you change from 16-bit to 8-bit mode.
I would like to know because my stock agency requires files that have an 'uncompressed file size' of at least 48Mb, so I need to upscale files from my 20D by as much as 150% depending on the amount of cropping.

Can anyone with a 40D tell me how big th resulting TIF files are in pixel dimensions in 8-bit mode? You can check on the Image size dialog in Photoshop.
Thanks
Uncompressed TIF files are 3 bytes per pixel in 8-bit mode. (6 bytes for 16-bits).
I just placed an order for the 40D on Ritz today! I should get it...as soon as they get some in stock. lol It says NOW SHIPPING! and not PRE-ORDER, so I'm hoping to get it sooner than later. When I get it, I will go to town with pictures for all!
good point. seems like a bunch of people were getting their 40D about 20 hours ago and it looked as if this thread was going to explode with pictures - and nothing!

I think this is a joke. We've been going on 3 days now, and still no decent pictures from Max's supposed camera, but he's had time to, ahem, "record" the shutter sound of a "40d" (how do any of you know by the way that is really a 40D?), and write the dickens out of it, but he hasn't had time to take a single decent picture? But he *has* had time to do a nice comparison chart of ISO performance between the two cameras? Who does this? Something smells fishy.
Your expectations are somewhere between Willy Wonka & his chocolate factory...
I was surprised Max took the time to get on here & share his findings so far.. Like most people getting their 40D I too will be familiarizing myself with the controls & any images I take initially won't be with posting on FM in mind, sorry.
For this reason I wouldn't expect many test shots for another 4 days or so - just got to be patient!
'Supposed Camera' person takes the time to share & you are dumping on him.....
Right, Dumping on him. The web is so full of BS an amount of skepticism is healthy. It is my own opinion that 98% of people out there would spend time taking a real picture first, not recording a shutter sound or doing an in depth ISO chart. I just said it sounds fishy.

With the exception of ISO comparisons, which there are quite a few posted already around the net, I struggle to find a reason why images from the 40D are so critical. I can understand wanting to see images taken with a new lens, maybe I'm missing something?
Nobody's obligated to anything here. So have a glass of lemonade and go do some shooting or report your findings when you get your 40d if you want. It's a photography forum, not a national election.

I hope I am proved wrong. Chances are, I'll be posting my own pics first though. Either that, or else I've called Max out, and he'll have to show what that puppy can really do.

A new camera is released. Someone has one and is sharing his impressions with a large group. But you fail to understand why photographers might want to see images from a new camera.
I would say that yes, something is missing.
Throw us a bone? It would take 10 minutes to snap off a few shots (they don't need to be formal test shots -- and post them.
OK, enough already, I will take some picture this weekend now that I see from the UPS tracking my 40D has been delivered. I will throw out a few bones too
Now could someone give me an excuse to go home early and get started

Awesome, Dan.... You are my new favorite person on FM!
Now could someone give me an excuse to go home early and get started
Mr Kotter
Please let Dan home early because we just found out his grandmother caught colorblindness again.
Signed,
Epstein's Mother.
That should work. Just cross out Kotter and replace it with your boss's name if I got that wrong.

this is coming from somebody who has ordered a 40D....the IQ differences between the 30D and 40D will be negligible....the real differences are in enhanced features..FPS,high ISO differences if any ,larger LCD etc.....
^^If that turns out to be true, I hope I have the gumption to return it. The features are nice, sure, but I expect noticeably better images. I'm going 5D now if this one isn't a whole lot better. I think Canon will take a bashing too, if image quality hasn't improved markedly in 3 years, which would be the case because the 30D and 20D have the same guts too.
