p.1 #1 · Canon G9

The new Canon G9 is up on the Canon site: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=15669

It has RAW ...

and 12 MP, 3" display, redesigned AF and then some.

But the raw support alone makes me want to sell my G7 and get a G9.

When will it be available?

In stores in October.

Pretty cool ... I am going to pick one up. 12.1 MP on a little sensor ... logic tells me that it will be noisy. I'll just have to try one out and see what it can do.

There are three sample images at ISO 80 on the Canon site. They look pretty good to me. I'd be interested in what others think, especially current G7 owners.

Seems like a big admission of a mistake by Canon IMHO - it is basically a G7 stuffed with more pixels and RAW because they left it out last time.

If they had left it at a more sensible 10 meg I would have been impressed, but as the G7 is getting noisy over 400ISO this may be even worse, we'll have to wait and see

Any opinions?

I would have been happy if they left it at 10 Mp, other than that, it is exactly what I have been wanting for a non-DSLR carry everywhere.

When I heard about the G7 and that it would not shoot raw, I was so mad I e-mailed Canon my thoughts. Maybe someone really does listen.

SOLD!

Am not at the very least impressed. Minor upgrades at best. Packing a 12.1MP into a tiny 1/1.8" sensor is just a marketing coy. Noise > 400 on the G7 is already pretty high. 3" LCD = higher power drain. I was hoping for at least a faster, wide angle lens at 28mm and a better grip and perhaps a more powerful flash.

Having RAW is good but the jpegs straight out of the camera was already pretty good as it is, with only minor PP needed, IF needed. Looks wise its basically a G7. Will be keeping my G7 and giving this one a miss..

Cheers!

Bet it's noisier than News Year's Eve in Time Square.

The first company that puts an APS sized sensor in a P&S with RAW and a fast lens will corner the market for a P&S for serious photographers. Remember back when early G model Canons had F2 - F3 lens?

Am sure it will be! Guess that's why they only gave sample shots taken at ISO 80!! I still miss the fast lens and the grip in the G6, which is sadly omitted in the G7/G9!!

Cheers!

What is the point of giving pros a pocket camera with a zoom that only starts at 35mm?

Totally agree with that one. Looks like my old Pro1 dodged yet another bullet.

Gives them the chance to buy an additional front lens for wide angle (these screw on accessories they can get a lot of money for).

It exists.

It's called the Sony DSC-R1.

Try it, its a great camera (though it won't fit in your pocket!)

That's why i love my Canon S80!!! Great camera, small, manual, 28mm, F2.8. Perfect!

G9 looks nice but not my cup of tea, or coffee tbh!

This continues to baffle me. Why oh why would they not put a 28mm wide end on a "serious" camera like this? Unbelievable.

Well we have to start the whining. 'G10 28mm equivalent'

It's not quite 'live free or die' or 'liberty, quality, fraternity' but I'll trade a few civil rights for a sharp 28mm. Steve
