Please forgive me if this has been hashed out elsewhere in this monster thread.
I'm in line for my father's 1Ds MKII as soon as he has a 1Ds MKIII in hand. Thus, I'm a little excitable about the release date.
Has there been any news of a concrete ship date? I've done a reasonable web search but found nothing, so I thought I would go to the pros.

One further question- does anyone have experience using a 17-40L on a 1Ds MKII? I can't quite afford a 16-35 MKII (or at least, not for a little bit) and the rest of my lenses are primes and will work great. I'm only worried about the UWA.

I've used both and believe the 17-40L is a better lens than the old 16-35. I would test several before buying, there is a variance in quality.

I'd be pretty curious to know where you got that information from. Sales of the 30D were down to 2.5 - 5% in Japan for the past 6 months.

Nikon is leader in the units stats, but Canon is still making more Yen ($). Who cares anyway!

Nikon tops SLR customer satisfaction survey
Posted by Stephen Shankland
Well, this news isn't going to go over well at Canon.

According to a new survey by J.D. Power and Associates, Nikon is the clear leader in customer satisfaction among digital SLR (single-lens reflex) customers in the United States. Adding insult to injury, SLR newcomer Sony came in second.

A new customer satisfaction gives Nikon SLRs the lead.

(Credit: J.D. Power and Associates)Nikon scored 822 out of a possible 1,000 on a rank of how well its cameras measured up with the qualities consumers find important.

"It dominates in digital SLRs," Steve Kirkeby, executive director of telecomunciations and technology, said in an interview.

http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/bto/20070828/jdpower_slr_sat_7.29.2007_270x187.png

Sony scored 793. At 788, third place went to Canon--the top seller of digital cameras in general and of SLRs specifically--followed closely by Pentax at 787 and Olympus at 783. The survey didn't rank Panasonic, another new entrant, or Samsung, which today sells Pentax SLRs under its own brand.

SLR cameras, expensive but high-performance models, are at the center of a fiercely competitive and increasingly crowded marketplace. Canon is the top seller worldwide, with Nikon in second place.

The scale is weighted to favor the factors customers find more important, so image quality has a bigger influence on overall score than camera style, for example. And customer satisfaction has an import influence over future purchases: 36 percent of camera buyers ask for others' recommendations, so happy camera users are good advertising.

"Satisfaction leads to intention to recommend," Kirkeby said. "Intention to recommend--word of mouth--is something sought by camera buyers."

The most important satisfaction factors for SLR owners are, in terms of their relative weighting, picture quality at 39 percent; overall performance at 26 percent; ease of operation at 22 percent; and appearance and styling at 13 percent.

The dominant performance subfactors are autofocus, followed by low-light performance, according to the study.

Compact camera satisfaction factors
The study also measured three broad classes of compact cameras: ultraslim models that are less than 1-inch thick; basic point-and-shoot models with an average price below $230, and premium point-and-shoot models that are fancier with an average price above $230.

Casio, one of the electronics companies that has jumped into the camera market, led the ultraslim pack with a score of 802 for its Exilim Zoom line. Here, Canon was a close second at 796 for its PowerShot SD line. Next came Kodak's V series at 787, Sony DSC-T at 782 and Olympus Stylus at 781. Most of the next were close behind, but two series--Samsung S and Nikon Coolpix L--were a big notch below the pack at 728 and 725, respectively.

For basic point-and-shoots, Fujifilm's Finepix F series was tops at 749, followed by Kodak's Z series at 744 and Canon's A series at 739.

In the premium point-and-shoot category, Canon wins hands down, with a score of 829 that's head and shoulders above the next, Panasonic's DMC-FZ series at 785 and a number of others. The other Canon PowerShot lines--A, G and S--ended up in sixth, seventh and eighth places.

, who cares Some silly JD Power survey isn't going to change the fact that Canon leads the 'prosumer' market by a wide margin.

Well a lot of people cared enough to vote and bring down the customer satisfaction level....

They are busily improving the specs; new LCDs, working AF, so expect a delay _poke_

8 meg increase in
3.5 inch screen

High res screen
13 stop dynamic range
dust maid
iso 6400

Add wireless built in and I would buy it.

Two points of intrest while reading the thread.

A: Who cares about the ISO? Why are people even mentioning it on a full frame? Does anyone here shoot anything thats worth publication here past 1600/3200?

B: Is anyone here going to use canons software? I've just always used PS, Aperture or iPhoto.

Each iteration of DPP gets better and better at raw conversion. With the new lens info it should get much better, at least until ACR catches up. My understanding is that ACR uses the Canon SDK as the basis of its converter so they should catchup in about 6 months. DPP while probably the best raw converter, is still a klunky program which if it had a better editor and interface would rival PS in IQ.

That was the reason I bought 5D then.

Why are people even mentioning it on a full frame?
Don't know but what's the point?

Does anyone here shoot anything thats worth publication here past 1600/3200?
Don't know because I have never tried.

B: Is anyone here going to use canons software?
I do and what is your point?

I've just always used PS, Aperture or iPhoto.

and I uses PS CS3 too

I care, and yes, I do push the ISO that hard, with decent results. Usable high ISO is a useful thing, but it's critical if you do a lot of low-light work, and need to maintain DoF while avoiding motion blur. How you could casually ask "who cares about the ISO" is completely baffling to me... can you not conceive that many would care about the high ISO, and with good reason?

I don't know, I've never really been impressed with anything past 800 IMHO. Frankly when it gets dark I grab the trusty 50:1.4 and shoot with at least a monopod.

Not all pictures are of daylight senics. I have shot 10 thousands of images at 1600 ISO + and exhibited the best of them in super glossy 13x19" prints. It really depends on the subject, photoshop technique, print quality and viewing distance.

I want to emphasize that these are pictures that exist no other way (dim stage lit dancers in performance with no flash/strobes typically F2.0 or so and 1/125 sec to stop some of the motion).

I buy all my gear at B&H but they are not accepting pre-orders for the EOS-1Ds Mark III..

Where have any of you pre-ordered the camera and do you think you will get it quicker this way?

Based on the past few new releases, you'll get it faster _anywhere_ else than B&H. Even Amazon with all their screw-ups.

I usually use B&H, but I called several times and one person would tell me you could pre order, but be charged; another said you could just pre-order, but when transferred for both purposes I was told they don't take preorders; and that the release date was sometime around December 10th.

When I mentioned other employees on the phone told me it could be done, he pretty much hung up. I was a bit disappointed, but preorders are probably a pain in the neck to manage. I still consider them a good source, but I'll be looking around for the 1DsIII pre order options.

Do you really want to be the first to spend that much money on something that doesn't AF properly ? It is based on 1D3 technology.

I can't say enough good things about B&H..I order from them every week it seems..but I do remember them being slow for the D200 and I gave up on trying to get it there.

Meanwhile Amazon is not accepting preorders for the Mark III yet
