I see that at B&H some of the 30D kits are out of stock. Could be that the replacement of the 30D is comming. I will not call it a 40D I think it sould be a 40H with APS-H sensor.

I don't believe Canon has a 40D, because Asian dislike the number 4.

For ex: G1, G2, G3, but NO G4, they skip to G5, G6 and now G7.

We now have 1D 5D 10D 20D & 30D, the next will be 50D. If Canon releases a 40D, that marketing guy will most likely get fired.

I love how the 40D looks exactly like the 20D on the front, but with a 4. Wow...went WAY out on a limb with the photoshop jobs here.

It's probably been said in this thread, but we are at a point of evolutionary updates, rather than revolutionary. I expect the 40D to be 10-11 MP, the 5D's hidden AF points, DiGIC III, sensor dust removal, and that's about it. Honestly, though, aside from maybe eye control focus for those who like it, what more could you ask for on a mid-range prosumer body?

The 30D is already one heck of a camera, and is enough camera for 95% of serious photographers. Heck, I've blown up 20x30" prints with my old 300D, and they look fantastic! Most photographers, and I'd say nearly all that are shooting with a prosumer body instead of a 1DsII or 5D, don't need anything more than 8MP...so the improvements to be made will be small.

Oh...and for those of you expecting the 1DsIII to be something amazingly new: I bet it's a 1D III with a full-frame 18-20MP sensor. Realize that the 1D III has about the same pixel pitch as the 1Ds II, so to keep the low noise craziness, expect the 1Ds III to not be all that higher in resolution, if it even IS higher in resolution.

I have to say that when I was seriously debating between a 5D and another 30D (I bought the latter), I was "slightly" concerned regarding a potential 40D/50D, whatever, change sometime soon.

However - and not to play the "holier than thou" card - now, I just shoot with both and am so happy I have a second lens at the ready, or a backup in the 'pack.

I could care less about a 40D, perhaps save for the unlikely event that it would revolutionary, rather than evolutionary, step. Barring the latter, I think we need to remember that our 30Ds will continue to shoot gorgeous images, as will the 5Ds, the 1Ds, and most other models that have been upgraded, as long as we *use* them, and not simply lust for another feature set. It is true that, at some point, upgrading becomes completely realistic. But, gosh: it's not like our kit is going to spontaneously dissolve (this from a tech lover second, and a photographer first).

PS: I did enjoy that PS'd image - imagine how unwieldy it'd be to spin the wheel with it positioned so close to the edge! :P

one ability the 40D will NOT have is it will NOT... repeat
will NOT render your dREB/10D/20D/30D useless!

Lets' hope they do not make the stupid mistake they did with the 1D III and leave the pixel count unchanged. Sony has a 3.5" lcd on one of their P&S camera with nearly 1MP res. Canon should've made the 1D III LCD at least 350kp.

Expanded coverage, via more points, maybe a couple of additional x-types and the 5D's invisble assist points. Need improvements in low-light sensitivity and AI servo needs a complete overhaul.

Maybe a higher capacity battery (but it already is Li Ion), but more important is the advanced battery meter functions like the 1D III offers.

8> will use SD cards! (er, hope not.. Nikon can have and corner that market)

I don't care either way. 8GB+ SD cards are out (soon out). I'd like dual slots, but that won't happen.

Here's what else needs to be addressed:

9> Evaluative metering needs an overhaul; it's too easily fooled by the situations they claim it works well in.
10> VF should be brighter and have more magnification. Nikon gets it right
11> A built-in flash head that can tilt would be nice
12> Some sealing needs to be added.
13> More CFs and a way to store and recall key settings easily
14> Live view; won't happen, but would be a preemptive strike as I'm sure Sony will have it soon at least and the others must be working on it.

Canon cannot merely match what's currently on offer; Sony and Olympus have much more advanced cameras coming and Nikon must be working on the D200 update or replacement, so comptetion is getting tougher all the time. Also I read that Nikon may be releasing 15 new/updated VR lenses over the next year or so and Olympus and Pentax have now got USM (SSW) appearing as well as having inbody IS. So more EF-S and IS lenses should be released too, to maintain their strong advantage.

You had me at 10, but 11 to 14 are unlikely IMHO. They don't want to overly emphasize the P-R-O in prosumer. Just like the "L" designation will always be reserved for EF glass (vs EF-S), weather sealing will always be reserved for the 1's. I'd rather have the IR transmitter built in, but they love selling those $200 st-e2's so that won't happen either.

Dewalt will be using a new battery in their 36V battery powered circular saw that is supposed to be available now. The new Nanophosphate battery is supposed to charge in minutes rather than hours and is expected to last decades rather than years. More info can be found at www.A123systems.com. Expect this technology to reach the camera mfgs. soon as well.

This information was in Popular Science - July 2007 issue.

So what about the 400D (aka Rebel XTi) then? Please, learn why the number 4, and just the number 4, is not used. It's not that they dislike the number 4. In Japanese the number 4, pronounced shi, is a homophone for "death". But when the number 4 is just in conjunction with other numbers, including 0, the pronunciation changes. That's why Canon can, and most likely will name it's next camera the 40D.

Actually, it's called the EOS Kiss Digital X. I have a Digital N (350D) and really hate the label which reads "Kiss" in LARGE BOLD red letters... makes my camera look like a sissy.

Anyway, yes the number 4 is pronounced "shi" which can be translated as death. However, when looking at the number 40 the actual pronunciation is "yo-n jyu." Which only has one meaning: 40.

Really though, I don't care what the number is. 40, 50, 10000

I just want them to release the darn thing. I've been itching to get my hands on the "30D," but I've been waiting since everyone says it's coming out this month! Meanwhile, my hand is cramping while I hold my XT with the 17-55 and a 580EX II mounted on it. Massage anyone?

Ok, so I'm going to make my completely uninformed guess, based on what canon has released with the 1dmIII and existing tech that Nikon has.

10 megapixels (20-30d was previously on par with 1dmkII)
Improved AF sensitivity
1.6 crop
same frame rate, maybe a 1fps increase if at all
Digic 3
Iso increase
Live view is a possibility but not a must IMO

If you look at where canon placed the 20d in relationship to the 1dmkII, I think you have a good idea where canon will place the next camera in the market segment. It'll have some features of the pro body to satisfy pros and amatures who want a smaller crop camera, but not too many as to compete with the 1d series.

I remember when I picked up a 20d when it came out I was content knowing I had the same mpxl count as a pro body but didn't have to have a monster of a camera and had money left over for lenses. The 5d has changed where pro's enter the dslr market to an extent, but many wildlife and birders swear by their 20/30d's due to the crop factor and decent frame rate.

Basically this camera needs to compete with the d200. What canon needs to do is start introducing some sort of on-board wireless flash system. They won't (580exII is proof) but they should. My brother in law's d80 has it, and I'm jealous.

I won't be buying this camera, due to the crop factor, but it's an interesting segment as it's where a lot of semi-pros/pros start out at. I think if canon can find a way to offer some reason for people spending 1500 to buy a 40d (or whatever it's called) over a d200 besides existing glass, it'll only improve their market share. I know a lot of people starting out who have a bit of cash, but not tons, and a lot have picked up d200s due to how amazing they are for the price (outside of iso/noise performance-there's always a trade-off).

I think the 5d was perfect as it has it's niche(ff but not a monster and a great viewfinder) , but the 30d has some direct competition and isn't doing as well as it could. If canon offers some of the 1dmkIII features (the ones listed above) it'll do much better but still not take away from the pro body's selling points. I mean if you need weather sealing, 45 point af, etc you're going to get a 1d body. But I think the 5d is proof showing that they're trying to offer a bit of something for everyone.

Of course this is speculation (which I don't normally do) but this is kind of interesting to me to think about what a 40d or whatever it's called will be like.

If you can recall a Canon DSLR introduced in July, let me know. Probably an announcement late August, or early September. Just about any DSLR camera from this point on will be anti-climatic anyway.

But remember, Our winters are like a tropical holiday compared to what they get over there with our chilly 18 degrees Celsius vs there -20C winters!

Its been between 15 and 20 degrees the last few weeks here in Perth and nights have been between 7 and 14 degrees and we are meant to be in the middle of winter!

When asked about yet another extention of the 5D rebate till the end of July my shop in Toronto said that their Canon Rep had told them that 2 new bodies are planned for release late this year.... 3D to replace 30D and 7D to replace 5D line up. Annoucements to be officially made in September ....

Its a big canon dealer so I don't know what to think.

That would be a nice 1.6x camera, live view, 5fps, 10mp high density shooting, sealed.

It would really cut into Mark III sales for nature photographers, if its focus is decent. I don't think Canon will offer live-view or weather sealing on it.

Well the 20D and 30D didn't really cut into the 1D Mk II/n sales and had similar features, They where all 8mp cameras, and the 20D/30D are only 3/fps slower then the 1D2/n.

There will always be a market for the 1 series cameras, even if Canon added weather sealing to the 40D as most will buy the 1D Mk III for the improved AF, the extra fps, better viewfinder, larger sensor size and better build quality.

If Canon did not add some features that are not in say the Nikon D200, then some might argue that it's not being very competitive in it's own market segment. Surely Canon can come up with some improvements that would at least put it clearly ahead of the D200 wouldn't you think?
