p.1 #1 · Test Results: 20 mm - Flare & Ghosting

My test of flare/ghosting of some 20 mm lenses is online now.

I wonder what you think about the results ...

Great samples. You're the only one I know of who has shown the flare testing in several different positions and have shown 'big halo' flare that I've seen on my Zuiko UWAs. Keep it up, and thanks for the update!

Thank you for the pictures. No, I'm not surprised. I'm overwhelmed, thinking of all the work you have done with these UWA lenses.

As I mentioned in the thread about Zeiss 21 versus Zuiko 21 you should have got even more variations of flare if you had tested different aperture openings also. Not that anyone can complain about the amount of work, and not that it would have changed the overall impression that much. Just interesting...

It's also interesting to see that there are no real surprises. The zoom lenses show the strong pattern reminding me about a javelin (or something) that I have seen before. The Zuiko does pretty well but that red ring is hard to deal with. And it seems as you should stay away from the Zeiss, judging from your test this far.... It doesn't do well with regards to distorsion, and now also not in the flare test. But both were results were expected/known.

Another thing I wonder about is the light source. Was that car lamp an ordinary halogenlamp? I wonder if there are some internals reflections in the green and blue are that are filtered away due to the source but that would show up when shooting against the sun?

Great work. And I think it's a great idea to show the result from the light at different positions. I didn't do that in my test that I mentioned in the other thread. Now I am looking forward to the rest with even greater interest. I also always suspected that there is a reason for not aiming to the sun...

thanks,

Grant, which of your Zuiko UWAs show this red ring/halo?
I have seen it on my 3.5/21, on Jonas 2/21 and on a friends 2.8/24.

Jonas, you are right, different apperutres would be nice, but I had to limit myself ... otherwise I would never have finished this test ;-) All images are sildes and have to be scanned, selected, faults detected, done again ...

I'm looking for a lens to shoot landscapes including the sun. So I have to stop down to f/16 or better f/22. No all lenses offer f/22 so I chose f/16 for my tests. In general I found that ghosting get smaller and brighter when you stop down.

Surprises? Well, the Canon 4/17-40 is not bad for a zoom lens. The Pentax A 2.8/28 is extreme: no ghosting but a lot of flare. I get the impression that lens designers have to decide: lot of ghosting and little flare (Canon 20/CZ21) or few ghosting and lot of flare (Flektogon/PentaxA)!?

Light soure was an ordenariy front light of a 11 years old VW Passat ;-)

Stefan, I also see it on my 18/3.5 when the light source is near the center.
