Now to Canon users out there, Nikon is not just about the lenses or the cameras, it's the heritage and the current accomplishments. Now, answer this Canon users, does Canon have a camera in outer space? None. Why do Nasa continue using Nikon? They continue contracting Nikon cuz of superior quality in both camera technology and optics (Nasa only uses the best & highest reliability). Can any Canon user top that? Hmmmm...

The olympics seem to like Canon

More fuel on the fire. Supposedly there was a press photographer testing a new Nikon FF prototype with a new 24-120 VR lens.

It's all fun.

Ummm, are any of us going to feel a wee bit stupid if Nikon announces nothing more major than a few new coolpix's this time around?

You know guys, I love my dear Nikon and find that the ergonomic aspect is underapreciated and that their lenses are a pleasant surprise as far as what good quality you get in the low price line - but for the top end I have to still say that the Canon guys have it better.
First they have more variety such as the very nice 70-200. They have it three ways. That is great. Nikon has it two ways but that f 4.0 that canon makes, is a great option to have access to. The non is version of canon is a better choice that what we have because it is still the same great focus as the expensive IS at the top end - ours is a poor focusing second rate - by comparison.
Then there is the aspect where Canon shooters have a more consistent set of lenses as far as technology is concerned. I have to say that it is frustrating as a poor nikon (poor as far as what's in my bank account I mean) aspirant that there are all these fabulous lenses like the 85 f 1.4, the 105 f 2.0 and the 135 f 2.0 - all very expensive and all still without AF-s. That leaves room for improvement for sure.
If I'm ever going to buy another canon body it will be some second hand cheapo, like a 20d for 650 bucks, only so that I can get access to canon's fabulous 300 f 4.0. I really want the Nikon version - but I will not buy one without VR.
That is where I'm crossing the fingers for this years goodies. Some of those great Nikon lenses made thoroughly modern, and for a rounding out of choices in some of the gaps.
We may not like it when we are pissing against the Canon guys - but right now, splitting the hairs - they have it good and we may get a bit on our pants if we are not careful.
backfocus issues nothwistanding.

BTW, an insider from Nikon told my co-worker today that Nikon had exactly jack sh!t for PMA.

That's what I'm thinking...nada, zippo, zilch for the pros. But probably more Coolpix crap and possibly a 17-600mm f 6.3-16 VRIII to satisfy the "true" enthusiasts...

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm definitely not holding my breath...

Then again, watching the idiots argue over the 1D III vs. D3 before anyone's even SEEN one could be mildly entertaining. Oh, wait...that's already happening, in this thread. Embarrassing....

Still has nothing on the new Zeiss APO Sonnar T* 1700 f/4.

Yes, that's a Hasselblad body on the back of it.

It's only manufactured by specific request.

It's a nice lens alright, but there's one glaring design flaw.................................. it's white.

That's true... Zeiss/Hassy lenses are supposed to be either chrome or black.

Some of Nikon and Canon lenses are direct one-to-one comparable in features and performance, other lenses have no equal on the other side of the aisle.

Having said that, what about Nikon's new variable aperture 70-300 vr-s. That would be closest to Canon's f4.

Or for non-vr, Nikon 80-200 af-s

Room for improvement certainly. But remember that Canon came out with a new lens mount that mandated all lenses had to contain built-in focus motor. Nikon has kept the same mount, which allows older manual focus and screw drive focus lenses to be used along side current "s" type lenses. (except for D40 which only auto-focuses with "s" lenses, but still can mount older manual focus/screw drive focus lenses.

I'm also hoping to see a new 300 f4 vr.

It is built like a large, precise instrument, more than just a lens. The white should help reduce heating from sunlight. There is no point in making it black – a 1700/4 would not go unnoticed in any color.

Especially considering you'd have to mount it on a turret on top of your Hummer. The thing weighs 564 pounds.

I think one would be unwise to mount only the camera on the tripod.

OK..while I still think Nikon is announcing nothing, someone on one of the other forums is claiming they snuck into a dealer meeting where the D3 was announced and that it's 35mm frame (no 1.1 crop) and $7000. Supposedly a new 50mm 1.2 AF-S is announced with it.

It's all supposed to be announced Monday. We'll see.

I gotta admit, the one thing Canon has that I think I would genuinly feel worth switching for is the ability to use EOS lenses on their HD Video cameras....

Yeah, Canon's 70-200 lenses (four of them now) are all L-series and are all among their best zoom lenses. The incredible 70-200 f/4L was only $500 for me a couple years ago, and this is a much better deal than the 70-300 IS, which is only slightly cheaper and not an L-series lens.

'
Last night I attended a Nikon sales rep seminar in Los Angeles, where Nikon's D3 was unveiled to an audience consisting of L.A. area Advanced Systems Dealers and myself.

Courtesy of my cousin, who is a salesperson at a major Los Angeles Nikon retailer, I was able to get credentials and attend the 45 minute meeting with him.

All camera cell phones were checked at the door, as we entered the meeting room. The LA sales rep revealed the D3 which was partially wrapped in black gaffers tape so as to disguise key elements of its appearance. For about 30 minutes, the sales rep talked to the assembled audience about Nikon's latest offering which is to be unveiled on Monday, March 5th at PMA:

- Full Frame (no 1.1 crap) - DX mode at 1.5x - High Speed Crop - VERY fast motor drive (can't remember the number he quoted, but when he fired it, it sounded at least as fast as my F5 on CH. - 18.7 MB - MSRP $7999 - No H and X models anymore, just the one D3 - D2xs will continue to sell. - Dimensions and weight were mentioned, but I don't remember the minutae. Suffice to say, the camera looked to be roughly the same size as the D2 series.

The camera was fitted with another new release: an undisguised 50mm 1.2G AF-S lens, which looked to be quite large and sturdy. Also mentioned but not present was a 24-120 2.8G AF-S. The rep said no new DX lenses were forthcoming in the near future.

So there you have it. End of rumors. We'll all see it undisguised on Monday. So relax, its here.

Regards,'

So now what is new for the PJ and sports shooters? Surely $8K is high for many users. And since the sensor has much less resolution than the D2X (8.3 MP in the DX area) it is not a replacement for that either. It is very curious.
