Sorry, but PMA is over. Canon released everything they're going to release. Sad, but I think I'd wait until summer/fall before you hear anything new, and even that's not guaranteed.
If the link I read was accurate (can't remember) Canon has said something to the effect that November is when they'll probably release a 1Ds upgrade, but didn't mention any others IIRC.
Tbartick- Thanks, when I saw my complete post in yours I thought you were going to blast me!
Yakim- Yes, the 70-200/4LIS is a great lens with a price to match. If you really need a IS tele that is small, it is a compeling reason.
Caleb- The 5D is a great camera and if I stay with Canon I may get one when the prices drop. Canon works on aggregate demand, not Anselwannab demand I know . My point was that the FF sensor is the main distinguisher or competitive advantage of Canon and it is not really aimed at the meat of the market. It is like the corvette at Chevy dealers. It may draw people in, make them feel better about the brand, but they sold a lot more chevetttes than corvettes. When I got the 20D Canon seemed to have everyone faded. They made their own sensors, had way more IS/VR lenses. Now it just aint there.
The 28-105IS USM is a great lens, on a FF camera, but with the eq of a 45mm lens at the wide end on a 1.6x sensor, they are going othave to buy a 10-22 or 17-40 soon.
I have a feeling that with crop sensors being the main product, they may have a lot of 28-105s sitting around, or at least don't see much of a future for it as a starter lens.
Sony has pre-announced two new DSLRs positioned above the Alpha. They don't even have names yet or sensor sizes stated, but one hints at something larger because it claims an enlarged image processor chip. Also three new zooms coming.
I'm sadly disappointed by Canon. I thought for sure they would be a 40D. I have been waiting to sell my 20D to see what came out. I've been waiting since October so I'm going to go ahead and get a 30D. Is it Ironic that Nikon only came out with a few things also?? *yawn* for both Canon and Nikon
I believe that they would announce anything/everything they had once the show opens. Oh well. I've actually been sorry I switched from Nikon to Canon. The only reason I did was that I wasnt happy with the D1x and the noise/weight and a few other things. The 20D had better qualities but quite honestly now after owning the 20D for two years I think the D1x was a better camera. They were only rumours of a D2x in Sept 2004 and I knew I wouldnt be able to afford one if and when it did come out. I have contemplated going back but I dont think I could afford to do it now if ever
PMA is over for Canon announcements ...in retrospect, buying the XTi last September instead of waiting for the 40D appears to have been a good call. I'm disappointed ... I have been holding off on about eight purchases for months waiting to see new EF-S, EF lenses and 40D ... plus many other items.
For those tempted to jump ship over to Nikon, I say "patience grasshoppers". I too am disappointed in having to wait for a 40D or 5D mk II, but jeez, it's only another 8 or 9 months until these upgrades are likely to be announced.
If I understand correctly, the typical Canon product cycle is around 18 months (sometimes longer), whereas Nikon users often wait 2 to 3 years for upgrades. For example, how long wait was it between D100 and D200? I'm pretty sure it was more than 18 months.
I can picture someone jumping over to Nikon for the D200 -- a great camera for sure -- but in 9 months or so I suspect Canon will announce the 40D and/or 5D mk II with compelling new features that will make us all very happy, except for the new D200 owner who have to wait another two years for the D300.
I'm not trying to dis Nikon or Nikon owners. I just think it's premature to give up on Canon. I think our patience will be rewarded. So hang in there. Enjoy what you have now. And dream on.
